Ubisoft Making Open World Star Wars Game

Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games Announce plans for a new story-driven, open-world Star Wars game. This is in the works at Massive Entertainment, and the announcement includes interviews with a couple of the developers. On Monday it was announced that the Lucasfilm Games brand was being revived, leading to speculation that EA would no longer be the exclusive creator of Star Wars games, which is now clearly the case. A Lucasfilm Games interview on StarWars.com indicates that their relationship with EA will continue: "We’re really proud of the games we have created with EA," says Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly. "We will continue working with them and our relationship has never been stronger. While we may not have a lot of details to share at the moment, we’ve got a number of projects underway with the talented teams at EA." Here's vague word on the new game:
Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games have announced a collaboration on a new Star Wars game. Development on the project will be led by Massive Entertainment whose expertise and talent will be used to create a story-driven, open-world experience within the Star Wars galaxy that will also utilize the studio’s cutting-edge technology and advancements, including the Snowdrop engine.

“The vast Star Wars lore is an incredible source of inspiration for our teams,” said Yves Guillemot, co-founder and CEO of Ubisoft. “This is the beginning of a long-term collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm Games, and we are pleased to be working hand-in-hand to build upon the incredible legacy of Lucasfilm to create a game that we know Star Wars fans will love.”

WAIT WAIT WAIT... that means EA lost the exclusive license deal?!? *YAY!*

So the question becomes... Open world game... so no starships, and on 1 planet...... Only 1 planet I can think of to really support that (Corcucant and I can't spell for crap today).

I don't see any reason why it would have to be confined to a single planet? Seems like that would be a waste of the license.

Or maybe it could be a single planet but with multiple biomes. Oh wait, then it wouldn't be Star Wars canon. Multiple planets it is then.

I'm worried that this game with become too much like the Divisions grindy formula cover based game. A Laser Blaster/Light Saber sponge enemies. Massive does not have much experience with normal balancing of a game. I see this being a Jedi on Coruscant city type game. Doing missions or bounties out the ying yang.

Hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see this as being anything less then that.

I never really got into the Division games, though friends convinced me to buy them... As in plural, because I am an idiot and picked up the second too, but they seem to have been pretty well received by players. I would be interested in a SW universe game in <genre I am interested in>, so I would have to (without enthusiasm) call that a good idea if it is what they go with. Not what I want, but something others would enjoy.

Given that it's being developed by Massive Entertainment, I would say that it's less Star Creed and more like Star Division. Oh man. Imagine a Division-like third-person shooter but with jet-packing Mandalorians...

This is the way.

I'm down for that. I'm not the biggest star wars fan, but definitely like ubi open worlds

Ubi's world building is always top notch, it's the shallow and repetitive gameplay that sucks balls - and not in the fun way.

What about a smuggler or a bounty hunter?

Nope. You can only play a Hutt lazing around your smuggler palace sending out peons to do your bidding. Personally I want to play a dyslexic Mon Calamari that goes around shouting 'It's a tarp!'

I am really excited at the concept and really let down by who they chose to do it. Hopefully they will prove me wrong but the Division, Far Cry, and Assassin's Creed games all are completely uninteresting to me. Ubisoft has not been a factor in my gaming options for some time.

Called it. EA's exclusive license to produce Star Wars games started in 2013, but it's clear they've lost it! Disney is likely very disappointed with the damage they've caused to their brand the past decade.

BTW Ubisoft has recently sold their new games on EGS and Uplay, all but shunning Steam.

Well, this 40-something die hard Star Wars fan gives this news a resounding "meh".

I was entirely turned off playing Ghost Recon Breakpoint after having so much fun in Wildlands. Not really sure how I feel about this.

I still play through SW: Jedi Academy because the missions are fun and levels are pretty big.

With all the amazing SW planets, I don't see this making anyone truly happy who may want Coruscant vs Naboo etc.

I am worried they will try to make everyone happy and no one will be happy in the end

They mention snowflake engine. Is this a descendant of the one with destructible environment, or a real AI for NPCs, where they attempt to avoid things or grab something if they start to fall?
Snowdrop engine, which was originally developed by Massive for the Division games (and used by a few others now). I'd say it's technically better than Ubisoft's AnvilNext engine, which they mostly stick to for many of their formulaic open-world games (Ass Creed, Ghost Recon, etc), and Dunia which is used for Far Cry.

EDIT: And yes, the AI in The Division games is decent, though since we know nothing of this new Star Wars game, I don't know how that will translate.

I'm just glad it isn't Electronic Arts. I refuse to buy anything that they make now. No Origin on my system. Wow, being able to play a Start Wars game again. What a concept.

However, if this will still need Origin and all of EA's bs for some reason, forget it.
