Ubisoft Making Open World Star Wars Game

Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games Announce plans for a new story-driven, open-world Star Wars game. This is in the works at Massive Entertainment, and the announcement includes interviews with a couple of the developers. On Monday it was announced that the Lucasfilm Games brand was being revived, leading to speculation that EA would no longer be the exclusive creator of Star Wars games, which is now clearly the case. A Lucasfilm Games interview on StarWars.com indicates that their relationship with EA will continue: "We’re really proud of the games we have created with EA," says Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly. "We will continue working with them and our relationship has never been stronger. While we may not have a lot of details to share at the moment, we’ve got a number of projects underway with the talented teams at EA." Here's vague word on the new game:
Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games have announced a collaboration on a new Star Wars game. Development on the project will be led by Massive Entertainment whose expertise and talent will be used to create a story-driven, open-world experience within the Star Wars galaxy that will also utilize the studio’s cutting-edge technology and advancements, including the Snowdrop engine.

“The vast Star Wars lore is an incredible source of inspiration for our teams,” said Yves Guillemot, co-founder and CEO of Ubisoft. “This is the beginning of a long-term collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm Games, and we are pleased to be working hand-in-hand to build upon the incredible legacy of Lucasfilm to create a game that we know Star Wars fans will love.”

I could get behind a Cyberpunk77 like Star Wars game though. Shiiiiiiiiiit, imagine what CDPR would do with a Star Wars license?

Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.....

Never going to happen. Disney are way too politically correct and goody-feely to ever allow CDPR to make anything close to what we want them to. Disney are an american entertainment conglomerate with a huge leftist lean, and CDPR are Polish people mostly. ;-)

I could see them doing it. They don't have to put dick physics in every game.

For me the best Star Wars action game is still Jedi Academy. Nothing tops the lightsaber combat in that.

Have you played Fallen Order (I've not played)? If so, how does it compare to JA? (which I loved)

They gave the Star Wars IP to a French company who's protected sexual abusers for over a decade and barely did anything when found out... I'm pretty sure from a "politically correct" and "lean leaning" standpoint CDPR would be a huge upgrade over that.

As for this game Massive has said its going to be a big departure from anything they've done so I very much wouldn't expect it to be star wars division style. I wish I could get excited for the possibilities, but ubi being such a shit company has managed to ruin even the thought of buying their games.

Apart from the sexual abuse, this sounds amazing! A large departure from their standard formula would be something I'd check out. Thanks for that info!

Still, the thought of a "Streets of Nar Shaddaa" type game in the Cyberpunk style is more than slightly awesome to me. Probably right that Disney wouldn't do it though. I mean, Deadpool 3 is coming with an R rating to the MCU, but I think the MCU has been more adult (edit: from a mainstream american stereotypical perspective) from the beginning so I am not sure it's relevant.

This has always seemed contradictory.

Epic has an exclusive license from Disney on the Star Wars IP through 2023, yet EA has been publishing SWTOR all along.

I'm not sure why everyone is so hooked onto the idea that this will be The Division: Star Wars, when studios are perfectly able to develop games of different genres. Heck, the guys that made Forza 4 are making the next Fable game, and I'm pretty sure that's not going to involve much racing...

Yup, that game and the one that preceded it were both awesome, first-person shooters (3rd person was entirely optional, but usually better for lightsaber duels)

An open world multiplayer shooter like the Destiny or the Division, but in a Star Wars universe? Meh....I can't get too excited for that, since these types of grindy shoot-fests hold absolutely no draw over me, no matter the IP.

I dunno, depends on how you do it. Star Wars 1313 sounded pretty cool, and was supposed to take place all on one planet.

Technically speaking, one level on one planet. Perhaps make 1313 an open-world level with Cyberpunk-like districts.

Being Massive until we have more details I would think this will be a GaaS and think something like Division. So I would expect online.

Eh. I feel like a lot of gamers have this idea that every canceled project was going to be super awesome and way better than the games they actually get to play. But to me, spending hours and hours as Boba Fett doing bounty hunter stuff on Coruscant sounded excruciating, like a KotOR game taking place entirely on Taris.

WAIT WAIT WAIT... that means EA lost the exclusive license deal?!? *YAY!*

So the question becomes... Open world game... so no starships, and on 1 planet...... Only 1 planet I can think of to really support that (Corcucant and I can't spell for crap today).

I don't see any reason why it would have to be confined to a single planet? Seems like that would be a waste of the license.

Or maybe it could be a single planet but with multiple biomes. Oh wait, then it wouldn't be Star Wars canon. Multiple planets it is then.

I can understand not wanting every game to be about Jedi, but an open world Star Wars game with no spaceships really does sound like it would be dull. Who'd want that? Maybe they could find some way to not include aliens, droids or repulsorcraft, too.
