Because they are the clearest and most exigent threats to liberty and democracy today from the populace. When dealing with cancer, it's generally a better idea to treat liver cancer before you worry about squamous cell carcinoma. It's far better to triage than to vaguely gesture and proclaim BSAB.

Moreover, there is a non-trivial difference between liberties and rights. The only codified rights Americans have are framed by the first through tenth Amendments. However decades, if not centuries, worth of propaganda have convinced Americans that they are interchangeable leading us to the terrorism and treason displayed at the Capitol so recently. Liberty must be carefully nurtured, regulated, and tempered so that it can be preserved and enjoyed by all.

In my own particular idiosyncratic view, the influence and reach of unregulated capitalism is a greater threat to the long term viability of American democracy than any one "left wing" or "right wing" group. The most damaging single hit to the integrity of the republic was the decision of Citizens United. It unfairly tipped the balance in to an Orwellian "Some are more equal than others" state and thereby reducing the power of the body public yet concentrating it in the hands of a select few.

I've been engaged online for more than 20 years. I've gotten in extremely heated political debates. Never once have I been threatened with death. I guess I was just lucky.
