The article (which is from October, BTW, not sure why they reposted it) is specifically about the Founder's Edition, the one designed and manufactured by NVIDIA themselves. That one is only sold at Best Buy in NA, and it's the only one priced at $499. All the third party boards are priced higher, even since before they raised prices again this month.

There's no point in randomly checking if the GPU you want is available, you have to find a good stock tracker, ideally one with alerts so you're not constantly watching. Then be quick enough to add to cart and check out when it dings, 'cause you're still competing with thousands of others doing the same thing. The whole range of 30 series FE cards were on sale two separate days last week, and the way BB is doing it, you usually have a window of at least half an hour with multiple waves of stock happening.
