Out of the Blue

On Friday we watched Alex Trebek's final Jeopardy episode. He died two months ago, but the fact that there were still new shows helped forestall the finality of the news. So I was awash once again with sadness when it ended, especially when it was followed with this wonderful tribute video. 2020 was a rough year and many people lost actual loved ones, so it seems a little superficial to morn the deaths of celebrities one hasn't met, so I don't mean to overstate the impact of this. But that said, over the year Alex was one of three of my favorite famous people who passed away (I guess it's a commentary on modern culture to feel so moved over the deaths of people you've never met). In addition to Alex, over the year Tom Seaver and Sean Connery also died, and both have also been giant figures in my life since my youth. Coincidental to the death of the quintessential James Bond actor was the loss of two of the most iconic "Bond girls," Honor Blackman and Diana Rigg, who in a further coincidence were both part of The Avengers TV series. And while he wasn't on the same pedestal as the other three, my favorite movie composer Ennio Morricone also died last year. Death is a part of life, and it's a surefire sign that one is aging when things like this happen, so there's nothing unnatural here, but I am very sorry to see all of them go.

Mournful Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

It definitely was an odd season for Pittsburgh.

Will they be undefeated? to WTF happened?
If I were a fan of the bengals, ravens, or browns....last night would have seemed like a dream. Particularly the first quarter. I respect the organization greatly but the players have been letting their mouths run, mostly mouths that haven't actually won anything for Pittsburgh yet, and it came back to bite them. It must have been glorious for the fans of the other teams in that division. Hell, I wonder if the first quarter led to babies being conceived.

We were right there with the announcers just totally dumbfounded.
But as one of them said, "If you're a Browns fan you know not to celebrate even in a situation like this (4 unanswered touchdowns at the time)".
I wasn't ready to turn it off until 2 minutes to go.
And yes, I'm temporarily a Browns fan... typically the post season gives me nothing to care about, but I'll always root for a deep deep underdog and my extended family being from Cleveland certainly helps.

I squelched a similar nickname for myself in my early teens. One of the BMOCs, a track star and "popular" guy tried calling me x-dog where x was my first name. It took a couple of years of acting deaf when I heard that before he finally stopped. Fortunately no one else picked up on it. He wasn't a total dick though, I have a good story about him helping me out in an athletic event once. He paced me on the final lap of a mile run which helped me finish in under six minutes. A feat I never repeated -- yeah, I wasn't much of an athlete...

I said earlier I figured there would be upsets, but couldn't figure out who they would be. I never would have picked Cleveland. With the problems they had surrounding the covid protocols it is simply insane that they won. I would say it was unpredictable, but... LA beating Seattle, I never would have picked that either. I knew Goff was hurt, and even if he wasn't he hasn't played well in the second half of the season (believe me, I know -- he was on my Fantasy team). Seattle had won 10 straight home playoff games -- although, the biggest advantage of that was missing, the crowd. Still, I didn't think LA could pull it out. In the end, I didn't pick any upsets because I figured I would pick the wrong ones, I was right about that.

Assuming you are C-Dog, you appear to be the only perfect score. Four others did pick Cleveland though.

Oddly, the 3, 4, and 7th seeds in both conferences lost.

Yeah, that's me. I hope that luck carries over to my lottery tickets this weekend when I check them.

Poor Benny, huh? Starting from...'Perfect season maybe?!' to getting crushed by the Cleveland Browns in the wildcard. Yeah, those tears were justified.

Nice one, Cleve-land! Anyone else pick them beside me? Looks like only 2 of us made perfect picks in the playoff pool.

It's be really sweet to see a Bills or Browns vs. Packers Superbowl, eh? :)

Didn't join the Blue's one... but I picked Browns and Bucs for Superbowl.
Browns having not won a post season game since Belichick coached them.
Brady in his first post season without Belichick.

I'm from Detroit, but my parents and extended family are from Cleveland, and their parents and older relatives are from Pittsburgh.
So we've got tiers of regional fandom here

Yeah, Robin Williams got to me too. A gifted comedian and a great actor. One of my favourite films is the Fisher King, funnily enough also directed by 12 Monkeys director Terry Gilliam. Both excellent movies.

The other death was Danny Kaye. I grew up watching his films on midday tv movies. They were funny and he always came across as warm.

My parents were lovers of comedy and growing up ya either heard my mom's Barry Manilow collection or my mom and dad's collection of comedy albums. Robin Williams and Bill Cosby were the majority of the collection. So loosing Robin Williams (was number one on my bucket list to go see him live) really hit home, especially considering how he died. When all the nastyness of Bill Cosby came out it was saddening that someone who was Americana and watched on TV for decades had such a horrible side.

But if 2020 has taught us anything.... we adapt, overcome and survive.

I'm a Bond and Avengers (original UK TV series) fan, so will really miss Connery, Rigg and Blackman.

Kinda helps that they all seemed to be really nice in real life. Rest in Peace, all three.
