What makes Alyx so incredibly amazing for a VR game are mainly 2 things:

1.) The game looks incredibly good. I don't know how they managed it, but the game looks amazing. All other VR games that are like Alyx (compared to simpler graphical games like, say, Beat Saber) all have washed out textures stare back at you, and an overall sense of "Wow... I am playing 2005 games again... but at least it's with the new VR experience, I guess". Not so with Alyx.

2.) The game. just. works. And it works good. Even the games with the most bravado, exclaiming how intuitive they are, much like Bone Works for example, do not even come close to how good everything feels in Alyx. As a result, just opening and searching kitchen cabinets just does. not. get. old. And the combat feels better than any other game. It's no surprise Worth A Buy made Alyx his GOTY.

Only downside? After playing Alyx, other VR games that apparently have somehow a good reputation... have become really shit. I played Zero Caliber and Bone Works after having played Alyx. Both games are extremely loved among the VR community.
They are shit.

I agree it was pretty well done, but, ah... Sounds like you went with the non-ending and cut your playthrough short by a few hours. Unless there's something different when you play as a female and are able to romance Judy? I played through most of the endings as male V and there was only the one where she cried.

I've been lucky enough to have relatively few bugs in Cyberpunk, none of them even remotely game-breaking. There were some clearly unfinished things in the game (such as the police system), but also easily ignored. Having finished the game once and on a second playthrough I can say that the story is masterfully told, and the ending I got absolutely broke me. I could have gone online and found a better ending and replayed it, but I stuck with it... even if it meant breaking Judy's heart.

I thought the folks with fairly few bugs were in the minority, but since this is a popularity contest, I can only assume it's the majority of players (at least on PC, the hate from PS4/XB1 buyers is legitimate and inexcusable). But I guess that's pretty typical that the minority are the ones screaming the loudest while the majority is too busy playing. Youtube & Reddit are complete circlejerks at this point. For those that do have a lot of major bugs - to the point it makes the game difficult to play - give it time for the big January patch. Buy it in the spring if your weary of getting the game now (but love open world RPGs). The game is worth it, I assure you. In the future this game will be vaunted as an RPG masterpiece. Just as New Vegas - just as buggy and broken at launch - is today considered an masterpiece RPG.

Metacritic really needs to go back and revisit games like No Man's Sky and Grim Dawn--just to name a couple of games that have received updates and improvements galore since they originally shipped.

Very tempted to get No Mans Sky - the recent reviews are stellar.

I have tried Cyberpunk, with Ray Tracing and the whole graphics thing (new computers in Barad-Dur, powered by 1000 hobbits on a big wheel, and 1000 goblins blowing air on the CPUs). Still not impressed so far.

A shame - the Witcher 3 was so good (even though I was rooting for the Wild Hunt the whole game)...

Then I will be more then happy to trade ya my 1080ti for whatever card you have with that allows Ray Tracing

Hades is a great and fun game I've been enjoying, and it's nice to see it poll so high.

If only they had an army of orcs at their disposal. Things might have turned out differently.

I did offer to loan them a few regiments, but they couldn't afford the 100,000 Canada Goose jackets and orc-sized pairs of Timberlands...

Looks like a solid list, those are all the top gaming experiences of 2020 from what I know even though I haven't played them all.

That doesn't make sense. Can someone explain how is it possible that platform exclusive titles have more votes than multiplatfrom ones ?

Alyx is good. But at the risk of sounding like some sort of VR elitist: its a bit overrated, possibly because of people whose previous VR experiences amounted to Beat Saber if anything.

I have no qualms about TLOU2 having the top meta score and I'm glad to see a lack of whining about the game in this thread.

Unpopular opinion but Cyberpunk is probably my favorite game of the year (maybe alongside Animal Crossing).

I believe it is the number of people who own a VR device to play it. Appearing in the list is pretty amazing VR growth.

For the 11th straight year, we invited Metacritic users to list their favorite movies, TV shows, albums, and videogames of the past calendar year. Over 2,800 of you participated in this year's survey, and the results are tabulated below.

Participants were asked to rank their five favorite titles of 2020 in each category, and we assigned a value of 5 points to each first-place vote, 4 points for second place, and so on down to 1 point for each fifth-place vote.

So it's a write-in popularity contest, no correlation with Metacritic scores, and they only list the Top 15 of each category. Most of these games are pretty good, though, so being low on the list just means they didn't make a lot of people's Top 5. Interestingly, TLOU 2 won by a huge margin over Tsushima (10k points to 2k), which means virtually everyone who voted had it high on their list. The other categories were much more evenly distributed with #1 having only 1-2k points.
