What makes Alyx so incredibly amazing for a VR game are mainly 2 things:
1.) The game looks incredibly good. I don't know how they managed it, but the game looks amazing. All other VR games that are like Alyx (compared to simpler graphical games like, say, Beat Saber) all have washed out textures stare back at you, and an overall sense of "Wow... I am playing 2005 games again... but at least it's with the new VR experience, I guess". Not so with Alyx.
2.) The game. just. works. And it works good. Even the games with the most bravado, exclaiming how intuitive they are, much like Bone Works for example, do not even come close to how good everything feels in Alyx. As a result, just opening and searching kitchen cabinets just does. not. get. old. And the combat feels better than any other game. It's no surprise Worth A Buy made Alyx his GOTY.
Only downside? After playing Alyx, other VR games that apparently have somehow a good reputation... have become really shit. I played Zero Caliber and Bone Works after having played Alyx. Both games are extremely loved among the VR community.
They are shit.
