I do not disagree with Torvalds but the difference between regular DRAM and ECC in price, especially right now, is more than enough to deter the average buyer. ECC should be the standard without the massive price increase. The manufacturing cost difference between them is not significant enough to warrant an 80% price hike. It's basically the SCSI of memory. It's expensive because it can be, not because it needs to be.
