Heretic Series Joins GOG.COM

GOG.COM announces that they've added the Heretic series of fantasy first-person shooters to their DRM-free marketplace. This anthology of Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, HeXen: Beyond Heretic, HeXen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, and HeXen II is available right here, launching with a 70% discount that makes the bundle just USD$2.99. Here's a refresher on Raven Software's series of DOOM- and QUAKE-engine games:
Not only does the series bring fun gameplay to the table, but it also helped usher in a new era of mechanics in the 2.5D shooter genre. Whereas many games of the time only allowed characters to look left and right, Heretic gave gamers the chance to look up and down, as well, making combat more dynamic AND more satisfying.

Past more control over your character’s aim, Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders also gave gamers an early look at a staple of modern video games - an on-character inventory.

I was looking for Hexen 2 on gog after I realized the gamma slider was broken on the Steam version. I hope gog put more work into getting it to run correctly on modern systems because I'd like to give it another go round.

EDIT: Sadly the gamma slider is still broken in the gog version.

Have you tried Hexen II: Hammer of Thyrion port? Also included a link for PC Gaming Wiki if you haven't tried them yet.

Wonder if anyone did a "Doom Project" type visual upgrade for this series.

Doomsday port is quite a nice visual upgrade if you load in custom model & texture packs. I haven't used it in a while so I'm not sure if their mod support has improved.

I tend to play these on the GZDooom port because it caters better to mods.

How I wish someine would make a new heretic / hexen game loosly based on the Doom Eternal style of gameplay. But with metroidvania level design.

Ah good old Hexen II. The first game I played that had OpenGL support out of the box. That game looked amazing. Always loved the nonlinear nature of these games, which would require some backtracking through hub areas. Made the world feel more real.
