Corrupted Cyberpunk 2077 Saves Can't be Repaired

A post on GOG.COM officially confirms that Cyberpunk 2077 saved game files corrupted by growing too large cannot be fixed. Until this is addressed, the workaround is to lower the amount of items and crafting materials you accumulate:
Unfortunately the save is damaged and can't be recovered.
Please use an older save file to continue playing and try to keep a lower amount of items and crafting materials.
If you have used the item duplication glitch, please load a save file not affected by it.
The save file size limit might be increased in one of the future patches, but the corrupted files will remain that way.

They just released hotfix 1.06 that fixes this problem. It remove the 8MB limit. Note: it doesn't uncorrupt corrupted files.

The issue is people using the crafting for tons of money exploit. Pretty much every person having this issue is using some kind of money dupe/crafting exploit. Yes those items stay in vendors inventories for 24 hrs, so if you craft a thousand items which some people are doing and dump them all around town that explodes your save. People crafting normally and getting to end game from what I am seeing is not breaking 6meg file size. Don't want to corrupt your game don't use exploits shrug.

You hit the nail on that.

Multiple-thousands of every crafting item, I've made hundreds of items to up my crafting skill. 40 hours in, tons of legendary/iconic guns in stash, doing every side mission, gig and leaving bodies everyone and vendors stacked with my sold gear.

4.7mb.

If you do intend to glitch (and why? there's no reason) just keep manually saving on new files. You'll have a viable backup.

You do know that the save game corruption is related to people using cheats to spawn infinite amounts of crafting materials? Should this have been caught in testing?

There are reports of people just 'playing the game' who are very close or got corrupted saves

Ironically if making 'infinite crafting materials' would crash teh game, like the SPiffing Brit did an entire video exploiting this to like a million credits while making a few zillion grenades and health kits. And he seemed fine (I mean you know other htan the 'normal' CP2077 bugs)

The situation where you get more crafting materials back on disassembly than it took to make the item in the first place seems to be totally intentional on their part.
Both by the cost (rare/epic items that only take uncommon materials to craft but then disassemble into rare/epic components) and by the perks in crafting that increase how much you get back from disassembly and perks to reduce crafting cost, chance at free crafting, etc.

But hopefully disassembly makes it so your save file doesn't grow...
I suspect the people with the growing save file's real problem is the selling of their items since all of those items remain tracked in the shopkeepers inventory forever.
The only thing I sell in the entire game are those $750 junk items. All weapons, clothes, and other junk is disassembled after evaluating whether it's better than what I have or not.

I was burned once many years ago with Brink. I am glad I followed my rule of not buying a game right away. I look forward to playing a finished Cyberpunk next year.
Yeah, the game looked amazing in all the promotional material and previews but was an unmitigated disaster. There was no excuse for it being locked to 30fps for offline play, which was absolutely bizarre. It's such a shame, as I really liked the concept. Like yourself, that was one of the games that motivated me to wait for a game to release rather than buying into the hype.

I passed on CP2077 because not enough had been shown about the game prior to release. It was all very slick marketing, which I didn't trust. In fact I don't think I've bought any game at release for a very long time now. I played Flight Simulator 2020 at launch - well, once they fixed a Microsoft Store issue preventing the game launching - but that was only because I have Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for the kids.

Hopefully CP2077 will be patched up into a decent state next year and I can pick it up when it's discounted. It's a shame, as only today I've got confirmation that my RTX 3080 will be shipping and due this year and the raytracing implementation looks really compelling. However, I waited a few years before playing The Witcher 3 and by the time I did the game had been patched to a decent level and had the DLC released.

And if true they are stupid because there is a trainer out there and you can just level to whatever you want much faster yet. If you are going to cheat, might as well be efficient at that.

3.9Mb save here. Im not a hoarder but have lots of materials. I break down everything then craft and sell. This doesnt make me as much money (ive not been doing the exploit, hell id just use cheat engine and search/freeze values if i was that bothered) but increases my crafting. I tend to make money by hitting all the cop alerts and im a katana build so dont use much money.

I did have mantis but got annoyed by the special death animation.

I wonder why crafting materials matter? There are only a few types, and it shouldn't require more than a handful of bytes to store how many you have...

If you craft, for example, the Armor Patches for clothing, it can be a random quality, white to legendary yellow, with the 'common' crafting pattern. So craft 10 times, get 2 blue, 3 green, 5 white, etc. Then you get people crafting 500+ times just to level crafting, and their inventory is full of that crap, so they sell all their greens and under to NPCs or the vending shops, and apparently those sold items never get deleted... there goes the save file size, apparently.

If that's true (I haven't been able to confirm yet if sold items do get deleted from vendor inventory after some time) then you could probably stick with selling your loot at a terminal which doesn't have an inventory. It just disappears. That might help. Having said that, I rarely craft and my save files are at 5MB now, only 3MB away from the 8MB limit and I've got a ways to go. This needs to be fixed soon. This is not something that only affects people who dupe items through glitches or hacks. The game runs pretty good for me and I've been having fun with it, but now I'm afraid to continue playing and corrupting my saves.

The Terminal deposit stations don't have an inventory, until you sell a bunch of junk and other items there, then they have a "Buy Back" window, which has all of your stuff. I'm not sure if that times out eventually, but it definitely persists through saves and reloads, I just tested it. Weirdly, after I sold off all my food and junk at a Terminal, my save file went down from 4.38MB to 4.37MB, but all of the items are still in the "Buy Back" area of the terminal. For the record, I've crafted probably 40-50 armor patches, but I have thousands of each component, hundreds of grenades and health sprays from looting, and 7-8 guns, and 3 melee weapons, with some main clothes and a few backup clothing pieces. I destroy most guns and clothes I pick up. I'll be curious to see what exactly their explanation and fix is, whenever it comes out. I don't even want to get to the 6MB slowdown phase for saved games.

I mean you definitely have 'hoarder' style of players who don't sell anything 'just in case' they need it. That's gonna be a problem for them if that causes their saves to be corrupted

If they actually mean the generic materials.. that's really crazy, unless the game is just recording the position change on the map for every item you picked up ever (I think it is for some item types), also leading to bigger save file sizes. I don't see any of the teal 'Crime in Progress' encounters respawning, so I think all the item status information for every one of those bottles, guns, materials, etc. at those places are saved in the main save file.

Somewhere, there is going to have to be some garbage collection to keep saves under control.
