Out of the Blue

We finally got the roadside assistance guy out to jumpstart MrsBlue's dead car, so it was homeside assistance in this case. He got it started, and confirmed what we suspected, that the battery was basically shot. So rather than let it idle to try and recharge the battery, I just drove it to the auto parts store and replaced the battery. It's now working right again, and it's nice to have confidence in it, especially in winter weather. Thankfully it died in front of our house where it was easy enough to deal with, rather than leaving us stranded somewhere.

Well obviously no one wants to be the heavy with their dog but I don't know how you can use positive reinforcement in every instance. Say your dog has an inclination to chew up shoes or furniture? You can discipline them without screaming at them but it seems counter-productive to reward them with treats for 'bad' behavior. I think it's like kids, too many people out there have them - pets/kids - and they really shouldn't.

Calling a guy out just to jump a car? Yikes.. Portable battery banks are cheap these days, Blue. Lots of models come with jumper cables and even a modest capacity (say 20,000mah) is enough to start an average car several times before you need to recharge. Keep it in the trunk or just take it with you on long trips for cheap insurance, and you can also use it to charge your mobile devices away from home or during a blackout.

I get that the US wants to protect their satellites and I can understand that there's historically been creative flourish when it comes to naming said agencies/weapons/plans.

But I keep picturing battles in space like in Moonraker when I hear these ridiculous titles. And Pence delivers speeches on the subject like some B-grade actor from Mars Attacks.

I've been watching Handmaid's Tale with my daughter the last few months and now we're waiting for season 3 ... but ... I have to say, watching HMT and seeing what's been going on in the U.S. these last four years has not filled me with a lot of hope. Now that the nutjob VP is announcing Space Force Guardians as their troop names, it just brought back memories of HMT all over again. I'm sure it's coincidence, but dang.

Any of the things you fear might happen due to the creation of the "Space Force" was already happening. The creation of this agency is nothing but a bunch of paperwork. It was an attempt by Trump to cement himself into history. Which is silly, his place in history is very well cemented -- it just isn't going to be what Trump thinks it will be.

Yeah... when you see the clowns with their guns at state capitals and at the homes of county health officials... it almost makes it feel like HMT isn't THAT far fetched. Pence is scary. He is as crazy as Trump, possibly worse, and yet he is a practiced politician. A Pence presidency could easily surpass the Trump presidency in damage caused to our democracy.

That's a good call. Didn't even think of that. I was wondering why he just didn't ask one of the neighbors? I have a really good emergency kit I put together a few years back and I always keep it in the car most of the year - fall and winter always. Yet I don't have one of those. And while I don't need it for my hybrid I can't jump anyone else with my car either. They specifically told me not to when I first picked it up - and it says the same thing in the front of the manual. So it's rare I come across anyone needing a jump but I'd hate to leave someone stuck if I could help it - though I would give them a ride into town or what have you.

I don't think Trump's crazy. Just a sociopathic conman who'll do or say anything so long as it benefits him. Pence on the other hand, oh yeah, he has drunk deep of the Kool-aid. If he ever managed to be President somehow that would be the start of WWIII for sure. Much as the last 4 years has been a gong show with Trump at least with him at the helm nuclear Armageddon was unlikely.

That was like Dubya's cabal of "The Vulcans" - Wolfowitz, Armitage, Perle, et al. The group Bush Sr. himself referred to as "the crazies in the basement".

Not crazy, just a sociopath... okay, whatever.

I think the concerns over Trump causing WWIII were overblown, but I'd agree the chances with Pence for that would be reduced. Pence's danger comes from the fact he isn't just a popular TV star -- as I said, he is a practiced politician. He knows how to play the game. Half the things Trump tried to do failed simply because he did them so badly. He had no idea how things worked or what the limitations of the presidency were. And he wouldn't listen to his advisors, he insisted on doing things his way. Pence could have done all those things correctly and probably gotten them done. Believe me, Pence is far more dangerous...

I have one of those jumper dealies. Or had, rather, as I learned with this incident that it too had died.

But we have roadside assistance as part of our auto insurance, so it then became the easiest way to handle this at that point.

Someone posted this link here before. Someone set up a notification bot and has it streaming to Twitch. It sounds an alarm and posts a link every time it detects stock somewhere.

Thursday night there was a big dump of EVGA cards on Amazon, sold by Amazon. I got an EVGA 3080 FTW3 in my cart and checked out. They're usually gone before I can get it in my cart, and a few times I did get one in my cart, but it would sell out before I could complete the checkout. This time it went right through, and a lot of people got one, or so we all thought. The next day Amazon canceled the orders. I don't know if anyone actually got any of them, or what the real deal was. The email said there was "a problem that prevented us from processing your order properly," but when I contacted customer service, they said it was a "pricing error." I asked how MSRP was a pricing error, but couldn't get a straight answer.

I felt so relieved after getting that 3080. The hunt was over and I didn't have to jump every time I heard a stock notification. Then it was like getting punched in the gut when they canceled it. I'm going to be really pissed if this one gets canceled too.

Cutter wrote on Dec 19, 2020, 23:57:

They're at MSRP, sold by and shipped by Amazon. Amazon trickles out a few at random times during the day. They don't show up as the default buy option, you have to click See All Buying Options button and the Sold by Amazon one will be there. I suppose it's a way of trying to stop automated purchases.

NewEgg has also been putting a few out each day during the week at 6 or 7pm CST. They tweet about it right before they go on sale, and they only sell them combos with shitty RAM or a PSU.

There are usually 1000-4000 people watching that stream, so you're battling with them to get something in cart and check out before they're all gone.

The Zotac store also has been selling them 1-2 times each day. They don't seem to have a schedule, they go on sale at some random time, but their site can't handle the load when people flood it trying to get them. I gave up trying to get one there. So many times I would get one in the cart, then during the checkout, the site times out, and when it comes back, I have to log in and start over.

I got my 3080 last week, direct from EVGA. I was on their notify queue since late October. Finally got my email on Monday, and received the card the next day (hell yeah I paid for overnight!). Was up and running for my Wednesday night GTA online game with my crew. I posted some photos and before/after benchmarks here: https://www.pcabusers.org/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=64703&p=373314#p373314

I'd recommend anyone looking for a card register for auto notify on EVGA's online store. If you find a card before they notify you, then just pass on it. They have the best system to beat the scalpers. I had 8 hours after receiving the email to buy the card, or it got offered to the next person in the queue.
