More Cyberpunk 2077 Fallout

A post on Bloomberg says the troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077 has cost the founders of CD PROJEKT more than $1 billion. Further fallout on the impact of bugs on the reception of the sci-fi RPG, Vice has an internal memo from GameStop informing stores to deny customers refunds for open copies of the game. Also, although CD PROJEKT recently suggested that console customers first seek refunds from their respective platforms, Tom's Hardware notes that they apparently never ran this past Sony, and they are now telling PlayStation customers they will be handling their cases directly. Finally, there's an editorial on VentureBeat calling out the developer for manipulating the review process, saying "CD Projekt Red risked the reputations of others to insulate Cyberpunk 2077."

CD Projekt Red deliberately misrepresented the game. It claimed the game was running well on the base gen consoles and it promoted the game as an RPG, when the RPG elements are actually superficial. It deliberately held back review codes for the console versions and placed draconian conditions on the review embargo. Then it directed people to get refunds from Sony when they weren't able to (something which has only just now been addressed). This is really up there with No Man's Sky in terms of anti-consumer practices.

Look, it's great if you like the game and haven't had many issues but you can't pretend that your experience is representative of others, especially when the issues are so well-documented.

Acknowledging that it is a shit show on last gen consoles, my getting long in tooth PC (AMD FX8350, GTX1080ti, 24 gig ram) can run a solid 45 fps at 1080p, which is better than I was expecting. No complaints here.

If a dev releases a game on a console that is utterly unplayable, yes, they deserve to be treated as if it's end of times.

I don't get why people with expensive PC rigs act as if this is no big deal just because it doesn't impact them. Console sales were going to be at least 40%, if not 60%, and they released a version that does not run and they withheld review copies.

Don't feel sorry for them. They share the responsibility for the abysmal launch on older gen consoles, with Sony and Microsoft. They knew they had an inferior product, one that was not ready for launch and they still tried it. They got greedy, and now they got their fingers burned. The PC launch was better, but only because PC gamers are already used to buggy messed up releases and because (if anecdotal evidence can be believed) the game does seem to work better, and glitch less on better hardware. In any case the PC version can and will be easily patched, I however doubt that the Gen4 console versions will ever be in a playable state and if they are they might be so degraded that maybe they won't even be worth playing.

In any case, the game is pretty great even as it is. It's nowhere near the second coming of cRPGs (not even close) but it might at least get partway there if CDPR does right by it and keeps supporting and upgrading it.

This little fiasco, might very well force them to go the extra mile with the game's support. (Maybe even throw some free DLC into the mix)

Look at them acting as if their nose is bleeding and act all morally superior as they throw CDPR into the flames like this. It's not like they didn't review the "final" build and decided it was good enough for the quickest buck ever made before Christmas.

By now I feel sorry CDPR. They come across as the naive guys who had the greatest corporate dogs sicced on them because the hype got ridiculously out of hand.
CDPR threw its partners under the bus first, telling gamers to get refunds through Sony and Microsoft, who don't normally allow refunds on redeemed digital purchases.

They should have released this game on PC first and then taken 6-12 months for console ports. A lot of the noise could have been avoided.
Game is gorgeous and as mentioned - very well written and just taking in the sights is very enjoyable. I have never taken so many screenshots in a game before.
My system is pretty high-end (9900K@5GHz; 3090 FTW3; 64GB RAM) and I run at 3440x1440 and get 60-80FPS at Ultra settings with DLSS on Quality.
I hope that CDPR continues to build out this gameworld - there is so much potential here - and it's fun already.

I am reading your comment and I'm like "nice, a positive guy.. the performance is shit but there's a gem in there and he found it". Then you summed up your.. what, $4K rig? You fucking kidding me? No shit the game looks gorgeous and plays great on your rig. You just posted to show off. So transparent. Ugh.

Me, I eventually did get my hands on an 3070 FTW3 (6400K@4.4Ghz) and the game still runs way worse than the visuals justify. RT? Shoved in there last second. 100%.

Sure, the game is OK The bugs I couldn't care less about. The unoptimized shit though? Unacceptable. And to think that within 3 months this game will run 50% better, mark my words...

It doesn't matter when a game comes out on any console... Consoles (outside of the more recent base vs pro versions) are static hardware (unlike our beloved million-variation PCs), and every game launched on them, should work on them. It's up to those companies releasing on a console to make sure their engine is 'dumbed down' enough that it runs smoothly, not up to the consumers, who rightly assumed a product for their console should work on their console.

Refund the game, end of story

I never understood why they even *bothered* to have this run on last generation consoles. I couldn't even get Trials of Mana to run without slowdown on the PS4, the system it was meant for. (PC? Like butter)

It's less poor people, and more greedy corporations being greedy: CDPR, Sony, & MS. They wanted that sweet last gen console cash, so crammed a game into them that had no business being on 7 year old hardware. Much more than PC, console players rely on the console makers to vet the games that come out on their consoles. Both Sony and MS have very strict policies for getting a game approve. That system appears to have failed in this case, surely due to the greed of getting the biggest release of the year as widespread as possible.

Wow. I'm not sure how blaming the victim for what was blatant misinformation by the manufacturer is logical... The consumer has some culpability for impulse control.....but the actual BLAME should be solely levelled on the Dev/Publisher that assured their customer base that the product would work as advertised. Letting them off with 'you should have waited' excused the behavior and encourages it for future releases.

Alamar is right. Consoles are static constants and the performance should have easily met a minimum level. There is none of the PC excuses that come with so many variables.

Aside : I preordered Cyberpunk 2077. My eyes were wide open. I expected bugs because Witcher 3 was a mushy mess when it released. I was OK with the risk/reward of my choice. My experiences have shown many gameplay/aesthetic bugs as well as two quest breaking bugs. The inability to remap keys without mods is utterly asinine.

Also I repeat myself; I will say they should have been more upfront with last gen console players (or even better just make it for next gen) but I get it, the install base of a 8 yr old console is big and wanted that sweet money. However after seeing the game play videos and screen shots past year people should have had the common sense to realize it was going to be iffy, at best, running this on 8 yr old hardware. If you mindlessly follow PR teams spin without any critical thinking that is partly on you.

The irony being this genre, game is a warning message about just that, the fact that eludes those console players complaining is sad and says something itself.
