Out of the Blue

A snide comment in the forums made me aware that the growing number of sites with paywalls or registration requirements may cause some of the links posted here to be less helpful than others. So let's work on a satisfactory solution. The complication is that many sites offer a certain number of articles for free each month, so there's some inconsistency to this. My first effort is to create a tag to cover all the bases by warning when a link "may require registration or subscription." Hopefully this is enough of a heads-up to mouse over the link and decide whether it is worth a click. Feel free to offer feedback on whether this is helpful as it is, or if you think something else will work better.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto was released 20 years ago today on December 7, 2000, hence today's new logo. This was originally created by Walter "2" Costinak and updated for our current format by Scott.

With regard to the paywalls it's a minor annoyance at best. As you mentioned usually paywalled sites like the NYT allow people to see the first article the click on.

Nice to see the Browns and Bills are for real once again, poor Lions though. Look forward to watching the Bills and Steelers today. Barring any mishaps I'm thinking the Steelers are set to take it all this year as they're definitely firing on all cylinders consistently.

Cutter.. Bills are playing the 49ers tonight and the Steelers play Washington. Steelers-Bills next week
Steelers offense is doing something new for them which are these quick passes. Ben is getting rid of the ball in record time and then the receivers add on the yards. The defense is working but I wonder if one of our opponents will crack the code to these quick outs in the playoffs.

I think the Saints probably have the only D in the league that can manage that right now, but it's unlikely. Watching them play Washington atm and they just look too damn good. Football fans in Pitts must be pretty happy right about now.

The Browns are not for real. Take a good look at their schedule. They've gotten to 9-3 and still manage to have a -15 point differential. They've held on to barely beat a lot of really bad teams, and made the most of a cake schedule. They will be dismantled in the playoffs in short order.

I wouldn't predict the Browns to win in the playoffs, but they certainly are better than they have been in a long time. And the win they just had against the Titans was definitely impressive...

The most interesting/astonishing part to me is the revelation that these recent natural wildfires are behaving much in the same way as the firestorms intentionally created with millions of pounds of explosives and incendiaries to efficiently destroy entire cities in WW2, complete with hurricane winds and flaming tornadoes, except even bigger and growing each year. That, and the fact that we are ironically creating the conditions for these blazes to occur in our haste to "preserve" forests by refusing to let them periodically burn in a safer and more manageable way.

I agree, it was strangely interesting. Although I never really bothered to think about it, it makes complete sense that we would have difficultly modeling the spread of fire. As the article mentions, even modeling the burning of logs in a fireplace is something we can't do accurately. Trying to do so for a large area would clearly be impossible currently. And while I had heard that fires could create their own wind, I had not previously seen an explanation of the mechanism which did so. And the thought this feedback loop can cause trees which might not otherwise burn to combust was in the words of a shocked Mr. Spock, "fascinating".
