Phoenix Point: Year One Edition Released

The Phoenix Point: Year One Edition is now available on the Epic Games Store and now that a year has passed the game's exclusivity is over and it can be purchased on GOG.com, and Steam, as well. Snapshot Games calls The Year One Edition the definitive version of this turn-based strategy game from X-COM creator Julian Gollop. It includes all the game's previous DLC along with a "massive" new Polaris update that adds new content and features. Owners of the Epic Games Store version can update at a discounted price for a limited time. Here's the Release Trailer and here are details on the Polaris update:
Phoenix Point: Year One Edition’s launch today coincides with the game’s massive new Polaris update, which adds new content and features driven by community feedback, including:

  • A brand-new tutorial prologue that introduces new characters, cinematics, and maps while teaching the core gameplay fundamentals.
  • New weapons and equipment with their own research tracts, including a riot shield, shotgun, grenade launcher and heavy cannon.
  • A new contextual pop-up help system integrated throughout the entire game.
  • New menu screens with updated info, plusa wide range of gameplay improvements, balance updates and more.

Phoenix Point delivers a new breed of turn-based strategy and action against alien invaders. Build global alliances, manage your base, and command your forces in intense battles with dynamic objectives and destructible environments. Procedurally generated maps, branching storylines with multiple endings, and enemies that mutate to counter your tactics ensure no two playthroughs are ever the same. That experience has grown even further post-launch with new DLC and updates featuring bonus story missions, cinematics, maps, weapons, abilities, factions and more, all included in the Year One Edition!

I had about 25 hours into a campaign from the previous version, but gave up due to completely screwing my late game up. Never lost a single battle, but every time I sent my crews off to fight, the NPC allies would get annihilated somewhere, losing massive amounts of territory. It seemed pretty easy to lose the overall strategic battle due to RNG. I'll be starting a new campaign though with this version soon, off the GoG version.

Reading the Snapshot forums this seems to be a major problem with the game, early game RNG decides the outcome for the whole campaign, along with a pretty unforgiving game timer, and alien expansion. It definitely feels at least as hard as old school UFO Defense/Terror From the Deep, maybe even more difficult. Early game mistakes especially get punished massively.

Firaxis XCOM and XCOM2 are cakewalks in comparison.

*EDIT* Hrm wow, good thing I gave up on my previous campaign, all old saves are incompatible with the new version.

The reviews on GOG are pretty bad...

Seems like this game came out of the oven half-baked, even a year after release.

Too bad.

So anyone try this version? I mean I bought in on release (as I am a sucker for these types of games) but man was I burned. The tactical gameplay itself was very promising, but there were so many incomplete or badly thought out gameplay loops (especially in the strategic layer) that the game felt WRONG somehow. No sense of progression or getting anywhere really with the research etc. (I remember that particular part of the game being very bare-bones and so bland that I can't even remember how it worked exactly)

SO yeah, very interested in the complete product (if this is finally it) and whether the game is actually good now.

I haven't played it for a while as I also had a similar experience - seemed promising to start with, but the more I played it the more didn't seem right about it. I've been keeping an eye on the forums. Now it's on Steam, the reviews are good for a gander. When it feels right I'll try the base game again. If I like it enough then I'll get the DLC.

Minor info tidbit: Snapshot games decided to honor their earlier Fig promise of giving Gog/Steam keys, apparently they had a cutoff point of like March 2019 or something, but everybody before then who backed on Fig should have gotten an email for a choice of platform, then another email with their chosen key. I did, chose GoG of course.

From Steam: "Buy Phoenix Point

I chuckled.
