Out of the Blue

Well December has rolled around, so it's time to make a decision about my Movember mustache. MrsBlue criticized it at first, so I assumed it would just be coming off, but she seems to have softened on it as it's grown in. She's given recent indications that maybe it should stay, and even opened up to the possibility I grow a beard to keep it company. I don't really have a preference, so I laid out the options for her, and told her I would go with her verdict. So basically my mustache is on death row, awaiting a call from the governor.

Today is also GivingTuesday, which is a worthy cause any year, but amidst a global pandemic, is likely more vital than ever.

Obituary: RIP Sylvia Novak, virtual mortal.

Yes, there is such a thing as a "bad mustache". But I'm certain there isn't an optional appearance/grooming choice which has a 100% success rate. I'm also certain some of those choices have a lower success rate than the mustache. But hey, as I say often -- different strokes for different folks.

Unlike the basic midwestern goatee, the mustache can be pulled off, it's just very difficult, in part because it typically labels you as a cop, a porn star, or a Brooklyn hipster circa 2014.

But for those that can pull it off, never stop. Mine isn't nearly bushy enough, nor is my head right for it to look distinguished.

For the above list, Selleck pulls it off, Vincent Price couldn't were he our age now (same with John Waters, who has a similar stache), Burt's wasn't particularly great and I blame partially for his fall-off in the 80s (it was such a 70s stache), Groucho's was usually painted on but man, when it wasn't it was so bushy that he could style it perfectly, Zappa's was also bushy but also kind of screamed "were I not famous people would cross the street to avoid me," and Sam Elliot's is absolute perfection and anyone that can grow that should be legally obligated to do so.

For every Superman in Mission Impossible 6, there's a thousand Dr. Phil's or Michael Cera's. I am jealous of all that pull it off.

Zakk Wylde. But, in truth, it's because I don't see the need to shave at the moment. I am not meeting people. I haven't been in to the office in months. What's the point?

As I said, it is a bit sad that Arecibo is gone. But has anyone else been reading the stories about the new data from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP)? Three million newly discovered galaxies in just 300 hours of observations. And being the IT guys there has to be crazy cool -- "13.5 exabytes of raw data generated by ASKAP" I'd love to get a tour of their IT facilities.

Tell it to Sam Elliott. There are all kinds of things people do to their appearance which seem a lot more, uh, let's say "odd", than having a mustache. And yes, I have had a mustache constantly (minus two periods of several weeks due to military requirements) since the early 1980s.

LOL, I think that's what's freakin' the wife out. A soul patch is not enough beard to counter the moustache.

So it was obviously mom or dad that got snatched up yesterday. And Mr. Hawk was back again today so I'm guessing he knows they're around too. I've had a few hawks and owls breeze through here from time to time and never stay - had 2 huge turkey vultures stop by briefly a couple of weeks back, holy cow they're big! Mr. Hawk landed in maple next door which overhangs my yard so I went out and got a good look at him. He was super chill. And not really that big so I think the squirrels would be too much for him but the rats and smaller birds would be easy pickings. Much as I feel for the rats I hope he solves my problem for me.

Don't fuck with squirrels.

Yeah I usually rock the stache and goatee - but short - mainly because I hate shaving. So my Braun makes quick work of the sides and just leave the front. I also have one of those Phillips beard trimmers that works well for keeping it the same length. I could never grow a viking beard anyway. And even if I could I wouldn't when I hear about all the bacteria in big bushy beards - including urine and fecal matter. Makes me gag just thinking about it. Then again I've mostly always had short hair and gone for a clean cut/prep look. Or like Sinatra said regarding the matter of personal grooming and dressing, 'Look like you give a damn.'

Manny Argueta, a 35-year-old single man in Falls Church, Va., has come to realize in normal times his friendships were focused on watching sports and going out to bars, and that he wants more out of them.

Yeah, those are acquaintanceships, not friendships. Sports and weather only exist for men - who are acquaintances or strangers - to have something to talk about at the bar or urinal or other communal place. When I go out with actual friends we usually go to dinner or just grab coffee, maybe just go for a drive and shoot the breeze.
