For how smart Amazon is this is one of the stupidest things I've heard.

My wife worked in one of amazons warehouses (in japan) and they're treated like prisoners, metal detectors, constant surveillance and you're being timed to make sure you're keeping up a minimum pace, you even have to check your lunch in at a security station. The company has zero trust in its staff. Not surprised they treat the drivers this way too.
Tell your wife to thank all the dickheads and goof-offs we have in society. None of those measures would be necessary if it wasn't for the dickheads which would six finger discount Amazon out of existence if they didn't. Or the goof-offs who would hide in the corners or anywhere else they could find, doing nothing if they were not constantly watched. Although frankly, I'd be less worried about it in Japan than I would in the US. Nearly everything in life would be better if it wasn't for the lowlifes we are seemingly forever stuck with... (and to be clear, I am NOT accusing your wife of being one of them)
