Out of the Blue

Well, yesterday's plans for a hike ended up falling apart. Just as we were to walk out the door we got a call from our hiking companions with the bad news that they'd suffered a flat tire, and would not be able to make it. This may have worked out for the best, however, as the day was considerably more overcast than was called for in the weather forecast. So we waited it out to see which way it went, which turned out to be drizzly and not really well-suited to outdoor activities. It looks much nicer today, so we may yet end up trying to get out for a stroll.

Hmm, that is a bug... we disallow editing of deleted posts, but that's an unintended consequence. I'll bring that to Frans' attention.
Try editing it now?
SUCCESS! Bug gone.
It wasn't a bug anyway, just a side effect of the way posts, or parts thereof (which originally was never planned), are marked deleted. So no fix was applied in the code, only a tweak in the edited marker.

I can't remember the exact quote from Milton Friedman, but it goes something like this:

"It is not the fault of the corporations offering too low salaries, or the rich, or the lack of jobs if people are in need. People need to have more compassion and give to one another."
Milton Friedman does not appear to ever having used the word compassion.

I was paraphrasing, that was supposed to be in the edit and modified to the neighbor thing. *shrugs*

I remember the video of him saying that quote, but I looked for like an hour to find it again and nothing. Gave up at that point and just paraphrased to try to convey what he meant instead of his exact words.

It was something about people should help their neighbors and stop bugging me and my rich friends about my sociopath economic policies.

Edit: Looked for neighbor/neighbors on that goodread thing. Nope, this one wasn't in the database. Oh well, If I ever find that goddamn clip on video, I'll bring it up again later sometime if the context is ripe for it. ITM, buggers.

Bug? Because as of trying to edit it, it isn't deleted. But it does contain the deleted Cutter comment.

Anyway, the part I was trying to edit is the Friedman quote, he was talking about neighbors helping each other.

I cannot wait until compassion for your fellow citizens becomes policy, and the government we pay to work for us actually begins working for us instead of the corporations for a change. I, too, am tired of throwing away my money in the form of taxes and getting literally nothing in return. Thank you for finally taking a sane and measured stance on something, Cutter. I'm glad we finally agree on something.

The root cause is structural, not individual. Markets overall trends are toward inequality and consolidation. Taxes are temporary quick patches quickly fixed with the free market freedom to buy elections/politicians/policy changes.

I don't know what Cutter said, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with the same vomit the Chicago boys economists and rich fucks say when people are destitute. I can't remember the exact quote from Milton Friedman so I'm paraphrasing, but it goes something like this:

"It is not the fault of the corporations offering too low salaries, or the rich, or the lack of jobs if people are in need. People should help their neighbors."

All the while pushing every policy he could to worsen inequality and siphon the wealth from the most destitute to the most affluent.

Meanwhile... A few billionaires suffering from a serious case of compulsive hoarding, hoard like 70% of the world's wealth or some shit.

One thing preventing people from saying it's a mental disorder is that this wealth is just a number on a screen nowadays. If they could see the amount of 20$ or 100$ bills it takes just for 1 billion and how those billionaires, having a standard sized house, would be DROWNING in their funny paper, with rats and cockroaches everywhere. Then perhaps they'd change their mind and call it like it is.

Just ask Pablo Escobar, he had a rat problem with "only" the millions he had stashed in his mansion's basement, not even billions.

Edit: Testing for bug

Ah, 'conservative' belief in the immediate slippery slope. Have faith in capitalism, the article even says Walgreens is basically closing all their stores there. I sure as shit don't want to be caught in the crossfire between thieves and random security guards on the off chance I go to a retail store. There is no racist angle here either, the SF law treats theft as a misdemeanor for $950 or less, why would Walgreens risk millions of dollars in lawsuits from injured employees or even thieves vs under a grand, in an area they have already declared a loss at the corporate level?

As far as voting Democrat, people in the USA are voting Democrat because the Republicans have proven to be utterly corrupt and amoral. Clearly the USA needs more political parties and a multiparty-friendly ranked voting system, but that's a longer term problem.
