GabeN Applying for New Zealand Visa

TVNZ follows up on the rumor that Gabe Newell was looking into moving some game development to New Zealand (thanks PCGamesN). They debunk the idea that there were any such plans in the works, "Valve does not currently have plans to open an office in New Zealand, which isn't to say that it would be a bad idea," Newell tells them. "It's just not something we are working on." However, they do indicate Gabe has plans to put the Newell in New Zealand, as he has applied for a visa to remain in the country he ended up stranded in after the COVID-19 crisis broke out. They do not know what sort of visa this is but note that if he moved there, he'd be one of the country's wealthiest citizens, estimating his fortune at NZ$6 billion (about USD$4 billion). But in the unlikely event Gabe did actually renounce his US citizenship, that wealth would take a big hit, as the exit tax in this county is 23.8%.

New Zealand seems to be the go-to for billionaires looking to leave the sinking ship that is the United States.
What country wouldn’t accept a billionaire?
You go up to the local government and you say that you’ll give them $1 million a year , you’ll buy a house , you’ll pay property taxes , you’ll pay income taxes , you’ll hire x number of locals for your staff , you’ll donate to local charities and you’ll tip well when you eat out and you won’t be a crazy McAfee person.

Well, true, but which countries would billionaires want to go to? New Zealand is literally the end of the Earth from which you can escape the zombie hoards.

Wrong. We learned from Myth:The Fallen Lords that zombies, being dead, find walking under water not an issue. Though the subduction zones around New Zealand might cause some issues for them.

Just having a billion dollars does not mean you get to live in New Zealand. While there are cases that make it look like that - Peter Thiel, Kim Dotcom - there are many people, many rich, that where not granted citizenship.

Under the pervious goverment, they allowed you in if you invested $10 million dollars (Kim Dotcom - who is still here)- that has changed. Also the rules on non citizens buying house/land have started to be tigthed up.

Money does help in that you can pay for the best residentcy lawyers but is far from a garantee.

From what I've been told by my (very few) New Zealand online friends, apparently it is a very nice place to live.

One of the best. Which is why they make immigrating there so difficult. If you don't fit a need you can't come in. They have the economy to support their amount of residents, but they're not really growing rapidly. They're stable and happy.

Which is why it was a big deal when Peter Thiel paid his way to citizenship there. It made people angry. GabeN would probably do the same.

Which contrasts with the US approach to immigration, as well. We are a growth economy. In order to grow, we need the best and brightest. This whole H1B thing angers me to no end because it encourages the best and brightest to contribute to, or start, corporations in their home country, instead of in the US, meaning the growth happens there, not here.

Also keep in mind that NZ is the escape pod for billionaire tech bros when the apocalypse hits:

In the immediate aftermath of Trump’s election, the theme of American plutocrats preparing for the apocalypse was impossible to avoid. The week after the inauguration, the New Yorker ran another piece about the super-rich who were making preparations for a grand civilisational crackup; speaking of New Zealand as a “favored refuge in the event of a cataclysm”, billionaire LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, a former colleague of Thiel’s at PayPal, claimed that “saying you’re ‘buying a house in New Zealand’ is kind of a wink, wink, say no more”.

So that might be playing into GabeN's thinking as well.

Taiwan eradicated it once, early on; new cases have basically all been imported for months now. Just how many times do you need to eradicate the virus to set a good example?

That^^ 23.8% is the "theoretical maximum rate", the EFFECTIVE rate after all the shenanigans, tax evasion and loopholes have been used must be pathetically low in comparison.
