Star Citizen Leaves Some CPUs Behind

Roberts Space Industries announces they are no longer supporting processors without Advanced Vector Extension support in Star Citizen (thanks Tom's Hardware). Thus their space game announced a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away will not support CPUs released prior to 2011::
We wanted to give you a heads up that we'll be updating our minimum system requirements with the update coming to the RSI Launcher tomorrow. Specifically, AVX (Advanced Vector Extensions) CPU technology will be a requirement going forward. It's important to note that only older CPUs don't utilize this technology, and we expect very few of you to be impacted by this change.

AVX technology was introduced with Intel's Sandy Bridge processor and AMD's Bulldozer processor (both released in 2011). This means that processors that pre-date this will no longer be able to effectively launch Star Citizen from the updated launcher.

That'll come after an actual game fails to materialize. Make no mistake, this scam will be taught in business schools for years to come.

Not sure how this is even news. Supporting a 10 year old CPU in a game that's supposed to be technologically cutting edge makes no sense. It should require Dx12 or better yet Vulkan too. Just support the latest and greatest and turn this into a 'game' already.

I think this make sense.... don't tell me you can afford $1000+ virtual ship but cannot afford for a REAL CPU upgrade. If I am RSI, I will make this scam minimum require a Ryzen 5 - 6 core (or intel equivalent). Whales need whale grade tools.

Be careful what you wish for. I can forsee that if in 2021, Microsoft announces DX13, RSI will shortly announce they will be scrapping all the work done on Star Citizen and moving to a new engine which supports DX13.

Remember the 'cutting edge' camera feature that will translate your facial motions into the game? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Have to be fair to the SC team, back when they started development was based on Transistor-Diode logic, and having to transition to 4,8,16,32, and now 64 bit development takes a few years to get over each hump.

I don’t know man.. My x5675 @4.2 Ghz is pretty happy with most AAA titles these days. If anything the motherboard tech is a bit long in the tooth, but the processor is fine. Thankfully I have no interest in Star Citizen, but if you said CP 2077 will drop this support then I’d upgrade tomorrow.

This is actually big news, my i5-2500K was released in 2011, and it STILL runs AAA games great.

Does this mean you can get a refund if the 'game' will no longer run on your PC that you had when you brought it? (When it had the original specs)

Some pretty good yuks in this thread, so I guess it's time for ol' uncle buzzkill to remind people of some basics:

1) 8 years of development, they still have a half-decade buffer to become one of the longest dev cycles ever.

2) Devs don't require higher CPU specs, so people don't buy better CPUs, so devs say: "look at the steam survey! we only need to target a 2500k!". And we have a backwards-compatible future gaming hellscape that we cannot escape from where the target system is still a mid-tier laptop CPU from 2013.

NOW HEAR THIS.
For your transgressions you shall be labeled a shill, called an idiot and anytime you mention facts or disagree with a tribe member you will henceforth be known as a troll. The best you can hope for is that the labels won't haunt your offspring. -RedEye9
