Out of the Blue

Happy birthday Blue's News, as it was 24 years ago today on October 9, 1996 that blue's Quake Rag moved from my personal homepage to its own domain and adopted its new name (and a capital "B"). Today's logo commemorating the anniversary was created by Walter "2" Costinak in 2008.

A lot has happened over all those years, and there are so many people to thank that I'm sure I'll forget someone, so apologies in advance. But thank you to Redwood and Joost Schuur for helping get the word out early on. To Mike Wilson for the invitation to the QuakeWorld launch event and to all the game developers who provided cooperation and friendship over the years to this press scum. To Mike and Brian at Fluxx Designs for helping get the new domain. To furn and Bagpuss for their programming back in the day. To Walter "2" Costinak for the site design and all those logos. To loonyboi for all his contributions. To Verno, JDreyer, and drayth for taking on the thankless job of forum moderation. Special thanks to Kxmode for his truly Herculean efforts at dragging our old code into the modern age with his mobile conversion and other contributions toward making everything work better under the hood here. And more so than any other individual, thank you to Frans, whose tireless volunteer efforts over two decades have kept this site going and moving forward. There's no doubt that without him, you would not be reading these words today. I also owe a debt of gratitude to the many who have taken the effort to send in news tips and links, starting with Ant and the tireless Neutronbeam as well as other current contributors like Acleacius, A51Abductee, j.c.f., RedEye9, Max, Simon, and ConsoleGenRL (I know I'm forgetting some, so apologies). Thanks as well to the many others who contributed so much in the past, including (but certainly not limited to) Mike Martinez, Enahs, Randy Perry, Apache, James Fudge, nin, Frans, loonyboi, and so many more. And finally, thanks to all of you. Many of you have been here this whole time, which is pretty boggling, and special gratitude to those who signed up as supporters when we offered that option earlier this year. This proved to be vital to being able to continue on as the pandemic devastated advertising revenue. I know that's a lot, and as I say, I know this is woefully incomplete due to my faulty memory, so one last time, apologies to the deserving I've failed to mention.

I'm greatly looking forward to our 25th anniversary next year, and the next 25 years after that. Excelsior!

Anniversary Round-up
Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.

Nice 24th!

However, "Video unavailable -- This video has been removed by the uploader" for Periplo Marionetas The Puppet Makers.

I was worried that would happen. It used a Queen song, so I have little doubt it collected a copyright strike.

I think my original name here was corran or corrandk, and I was living in Denmark at the time. It was my quake name. Sometime between then and now, including a move back to the states, I changed my nick to Jivaro for reasons I don't actually recall. I may have just forgotten how to access the other account. Too long ago to remember. I use to check Voodoo Extreme and Blue's every day back in the Billy Wilson days of VE3D (RIP Billy). When Blue gave us the opportunity to chip in monthly I jumped at it because it has been an absolute luxury to be able to come here and read the feed daily for all of these years. Thank you Blue, and congratulations on yet another site birthday!

Ha, never heard about this. That is excellent.

That was the work of Levelord, one of the developers I mentioned befriending this "press scum." He is a very fine fellow indeed.

Been checking out the page since 1997. Heck, maybe even since late 1996. I don't remember! Lurked around for years. Still the best news site on the internet.

Happy birthday to Blue's News! I'm a lurker for the most part, but I have thoroughly enjoyed reading articles posted through here, and especially enjoyed the exploits and (mis)adventures of Blue and Co. in "Out of the Blue"/"Into The Black".

I don't know when exactly I started coming to BluesNews but it was before I initially registered here on the forums, which was already 20 years ago. I remember it being the old format. Since roughly 1998ish either BluesNews or HardOCP (no longer exists, RIP) was my homepage. Blues has been my homepage for the majority of that time. I've been wanting to donate somehow for YEARS so I was so happy when the patreon was opened up and supported you immediately. I can't think of ANY other personal website I used to visit in the 90's that is still around. It's a testament to the quality content provided by you and the members like Ant and the others.

I've contributed a few links myself but nothing super special. I'm just thrilled that after so many years you are still here when so many others have gone away.
