Baldur's Gate 3 Early Access Begins

Larian Studios announces the launch of Early Access to Baldur's Gate 3 for Windows and macOS on GOG. com, Steam, and Stadia. This is the first act of the D&D RPG sequel, offering about 25 hours of content, 46,000 lines of English dialogue, 600 NPCs, and 146 spells and actions. As previously announced, this includes the game's extensive character creation system which allows you to pick from 16 races and subraces spanning six different classes, each with their own subclasses. Here's the Early Access Launch Trailer along with more details:
Today’s release into early access marks the beginning of a long journey toward full launch. Working directly with the community, the team will continuously iterate and improve upon the game, adding new content along the way. RPGs this large, with so many permutations, thrive from feedback as new features and fixes are incrementally added to the game. Early access gives players a chance to participate in development and gives the team an opportunity to explore different game ideas with a live community.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is an expansive, cinematic, player-driven RPG based on 5e D&D. It features a rich character creation system where players can create an avatar based on 16 different D&D races and subraces, select their cantrips, skills and abilities, and enter a world where their actions truly define the story. With a parasite planted in their brains, players wake up aboard a burning Nautiloid ship racing across hell at the center of an epic fight between Mind Flayers and red dragons. And that’s just the very beginning of this journey. Players will encounter many challenges upon their return to the Forgotten Realms in a tale about fellowship and betrayal, sacrifice and survival -- and the lure of absolute power.

Baldur’s Gate 3 expands on Larian’s award-winning narrative gameplay through the advent of cinematic storytelling and with dice rolls for key decisions throughout the game, in and out of combat. Dialogue options often have multiple responses, some of which may require a dice roll to succeed, defined by both luck as well as the attributes of the player character, or the circumstances of the situation.

The Forgotten Realms are a vast, detailed and diverse world, and there are secrets to be discovered all around. Verticality is a vital part of exploration. Players can sneak, dip, shove, climb, and jump as they journey from the depths of the Underdark to the glittering rooftops of the Upper City. How you survive, and the mark you leave on the world, is up to you.

Major Features:

  • Online multiplayer for up to four players allows adventurers to join forces in combat and split their party to follow their own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it!
  • Evolved, turn-based combat based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage and disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight.
  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms through your choices and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play as or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story.
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode allows players to pause the world around them at any time, even outside of combat, letting you set up a tactical advantage before combat begins, pull off a heist with pin-point precision, escape a fiendish trap and more. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- and create your own luck!

It's the plan to stay in EA for at least a year combined with the audacity to ask 60+bucks without setting a real deadline aka release date for themselves and us that pisses me off. People that fall for this shit enable this shit.

As one said you could pre-order CP2077 a long time ago and get nothing but a wait. They are clear what this is and there is a ton of feedback already at their main site forums, that's what people love to do. Choice.

I'm not sure when/if when I will join in. I can still participate in feeback, watch twitch etc.

With EA comes lack of focus; damage control in the form of hotfixes that wouldn't make sense to focus on already otherwise, because Gerard from Holland goes viral on Reddit because his dwarf rogue clips through the wench's bedroom floor and now his game is broken.

Fucking Early Access is the worst thing that happened to the game industry, I swear to God. Would this have made sense before that EA trend?

“Though Act 1 (the content for Early Access) is defined, Act’s 2 and 3 are work in progress. It’s therefore difficult to predict when 1.0 will launch. We anticipate Baldur’s Gate 3 being in Early Access for at least one year but we’ll have to see how it goes. It’ll be ready when it’s ready.”

It's therefore difficult to predict when 1.0 will launch? There were only a few clever devs with the "when it's done" attitude in the past. Anyway, what I read from this is that I probably won't be touching Baldur's Gate 3 until at least 2022. Fucking hell.

Also, 80 BUCKS for alpha-testing a very much unfinished game? And people just eat this shit up? Tsk tsk unbe-fucking-lievable.

I agree whole-heartedly with this sentiment. I guess it would make more sense if it was some kind of beta, as in content complete but with missing features but this is maybe one third of the "planned" game with who knows how many bugs, missing features etc.

Hard pass until they at least get to 1.0 or whatever they end up calling it when it goes from Alpha to Beta.

Gotta agree....the temptation is there....but between the pricetag and approach to EA I think I'll wait until 1.0 and see what the state of the game is then.

That's the only winning move in this game. Never play Larian games before they are done... Early Access is usually the true to the metal Alpha experience, and I wonder how many nooblets fall into this trap on Steam.. given there are 70k ! active players right now, of an EARLY ALPHA VERSION, with 50% of classes missing and tons of things not working right I'd say there are nooblets aplenty...

Or people like myself who are aware and fine of the alpha state. Some people simply want to play around with it and don't want to wait. shrug.

Excellent! Test it well, early adopters. I'll be getting this game on GoG eventually, might even wait a month or four for patches post release.

I generally try to avoid easy access for single player / story driven games as I feel I just end up spoiling the final release for myself, but it’s got coop so I am very strongly considering letting that be a loophole here...
