Star Wars: Squadrons Launches

Star Wars: Squadrons is now available, offering the chance to jump into the cockpit of a starfighter and engage in space dogfights in the Star Wars universe. This is out for Windows and consoles, and the PC edition, which includes optional virtual reality support, can be purchased through Origin, the Epic Games Store, or Steam. Here's the most recent Official Gameplay Trailer and here's a description of what to expect:
Master the art of starfighter combat in the authentic piloting experience STAR WARS™: Squadrons. Buckle up and feel the adrenaline of first-person, multiplayer space dogfights alongside your squadron. Pilots who enlist will step into the cockpits of starfighters from both the New Republic and Imperial fleets and fight in strategic 5v5 space battles. Modify your starfighter, and adjust the composition of your squadron to suit varying playstyles and crush the opposition. Pilots will triumph as a team and complete tactical objectives across known and never-before-seen battlefields, including the gas giant of Yavin Prime and the shattered moon of Galitan.

Take control of starfighters such as the X-wing and TIE fighter. Customize loadouts and cosmetics. Divert power between weapons, shields, and engines while immersing yourself in the cockpit. In addition, players will have the option to play the entirety of the game in virtual reality!

Learn what it means to be a pilot in a thrilling STAR WARS™ single-player story set after the events of Return of the Jedi. Seen from alternating perspectives between 2 factions, iconic and emerging leaders on both sides are battling for the galaxy. The New Republic fights for freedom. The Empire demands order. We need you to join the galaxy’s finest.

All wings report in — Plan skirmishes with your squadron in the briefing room before taking off to the evolving battlefields across the galaxy. Compete in intense 5v5 multiplayer dogfights, or unite with your squadron to tip the scales in monumental fleet battles. Together, you’re the galaxy’s finest.

Master legendary starfighters — Take control of different classes of starfighters from both the New Republic and Imperial fleets — including the agile A-wing and the devastating TIE bomber. Modify your ship, divert the power between its systems, and destroy your opponents in strategic space dogfights.

Live your STAR WARS pilot fantasy — The cockpit is your home. Use its dashboards to your advantage and — with just a thin hull of metal and glass between you and the perils of space — feel the intensity of combat from a first-person perspective. Take off in thrilling multiplayer modes and a unique single-player STAR WARS story, which covers a key campaign near the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. Immerse yourself in the pilot’s seat completely with the option to play the entirety of STAR WARS: Squadrons in VR.

The mission is clear — STAR WARS: Squadrons is a fully self-contained experience from day one, where you earn rewards through play. Climb the ranks and unlock new components like weapons, hulls, engines, shields, and cosmetic items in a clear path for progression that keeps gameplay fresh and engaging.

How's K/M + Gamepad support? I don't have my HOTAS where I am at the moment.

there's a practice mode i was messing around with just to get used to the controls. i think it lets you spawn in enemies (there was a spawn menu) but i didn't use it, just wanted to learn to fly in peace.

i didn't have any of the issues people are griping about. rebinded some controls, but didn't have dead zone issues, nor performance issues. vega64 liquid/ryzen 5 1600x on 3440x1440 ultrawide.

it's definitely a budget version of xwing, but it's still a good game. moreso because they're only charging $40 for it. GMG has it for 10% off too.

Thanks!

Yeah, there's a button for "Fleet Battles vs AI" in the multiplayer section and you can opt to play with randos (don't see an option for inviting friends though) or solo with AI squadmates vs AI.

No option for vs AI in Dogfight mode afaik.

Yeah. EA has done some slimy low-down shit that I will never forget, but in this case, they once again did a good job. That's 2 in a row EA; keep it going.

Deserved but very kneejerk distrust of EA.

I've played the first couple missions and it's another X-Wing/Tie Fighter game. It's definitely a 2020 take on that formula, with respect to story telling and mission design, but it's an X-Wing game nonetheless. I don't think I like it as much as the games from the 90s, but the only stuff I actively dislike are easily patched technical hiccups.

WorthABuy made a video about the HOTAS support too. Apparently the deadzone is such that the first 50% of stick travel doesn't steer the ship at all.

Adjusting stick sensitivity in the options fixes that. By default the game appears to have a basically horizontal input curve around the origin; set sensitivity to 100% and you linearize the curve into a straight diagonal, removing the dead zone; keep it between 80-95% for a bit of a curve without going flat around the origin.

You can change the deadzone (and sens curve) of any hotas with the hotas software...

Hmm, I was running RTSS and didn't notice my CPU (i7-9700k @ 5.0) going to 100% at any point. But, it did seem like something was off when you are first person in a hanger and I'm sure it was probably this 30fps cap. I'll have to look more closely at stuff tonight when I get a chance to play it more. But don't get me wrong, I'm not even remotely suggesting anyone should buy this game.

I played some of the single player last night and it was pretty fun. I had no performance issues or crashes, but I don't do VR.

I had read a comment that it has been dumbed down in some way in comparison to older titles. I honestly don't remember all the details of the original X-Wing game any more, but it seemed like the stuff you would expect is there. You are able to allocate power to engines, weapons, or shields, and you can toggle between boosting forward or back shield at the expense of the other, etc.

I haven't played enough of it to make any kind of call on it, but so far I haven't found anything wrong with it and enjoyed what I have played of it.
