Since Ars is a PC-focused site, however, I have to begin any impressions with a dire warning. Until we see significant patches to Squadrons' PC version, I must advise prospective players to not buy the game on PC (yet).

EA drops the ball yet again. Shocker. Wry

Pretty sad when a company like EA still can't come close to what the space portion of Star Wars Galaxies offered 16 years ago. Can you say pathetic!

I'm certain they are doing everything they can not to remake that.

It's an EA game. It's surprising that there's a SP campaign at all, and would be silly to expect it to be anything but super short.

Except that Respawn started developing that game years before being purchased by EA. So it really had nothing to do with EA at all.

Not shocking, really. But if you read the full review, it isn't about the game itself, so much as issues they ran into with VR. Specifically, trying to use VR from Origin, rather than Steam.

Let me guess?

It runs like shit on my Pentium II with eight megabytes of RAM!
It also forces you to play as some sort of anti Donald Trump Antifi space man who is trying riot.
It only has 20 hours of game play, and I expect 600-5000 hours of unique gameplay
No microtransactions and game as a service feature is going to hurt my stonk portfolio
So sick of EA dropping that ball!!!

Yeah, the Ars review seemed mostly positive on the game itself, just quibbles with patchable technical problems for that specific VR setup. Most of the other reviews seem positive to enthusiastically positive.

I think they'll be fine. They are going to require an installation of the original game. The main worry to me I think is whether or not they are biting off more than they can chew. Both the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter had at least 50 missions each counting the base game and their expansions.

Technically, yes. However, work on JFO began in May 2016. JFO would have still been in development by the time EA purchased the studio in November 2017. EA could have scrapped the project as a single-player experience doesn't align with their vision, or they could have forced Respawn to bolt-on an MTX shop. Neither happened, which prompted the reasonable expectation that post-JFO, Star Wars, would continue to embrace long single-player experiences in addition to multiplayer ones. I was wrong. EA is EA, hence the facepalm.

The going has been slow. It sounds like most of the engine updates are finished, and they're really having trouble getting all the models done. They're looking for artists and modelers right now.

Sure looks nice Drool
This guy's review came up when I did a search. Don't know the dude, but he doesn't come off like a shill. He covered a lot of the stuff I'm curious about in terms of the controls.
His vr setup is impressive and it looks like it would be an awesome experience to play like that. He has a throttle and stick controls which he says is great for immersion, but maybe not-so-great for dexterity compared to a mouse.
I smiled when he turned his head around in his cockpit you see the R2 unit sitting there in the back.
I don't recall him saying anything about motion sickness but he's obviously a well-worn enthusiast.

From Polygon:
Star Wars: Squadrons is every inch the spaceflight simulation that fans have been dreaming of for a generation. It accommodates players in extraordinary ways, from the quality of its many controller options to its ability to form parties across multiple platforms. It’s also one of the most focused games that Electronic Arts has produced in the last 15 years.

Hmm I don't care about a short single player campaign (that was kind of expected) but what are the VR issues?

Ok I just gave the Ars tech reveiw a readthrough, guess Im not buying this, until they iron out the VR issues.
