The way Netflix (and Amazon Prime) cancel shows left and right is so freakin' annoying. There were several series that I thought were really good, and just as you start connecting with the different characters, wham!

I called Netflix the new Fox a while back after canceling a bunch of good shows after 1 or 2 seasons, just when they were getting good. It's made me not even start watching a show until it gets a second season, unless it's planned as a one-season show. I don't watch much TV anyway, maybe one show a day at most, occasionally two. I prefer to stick with one show from start to finish rather than watching several shows at a time.

Star Trek TNG Season 1 really gets too much hate. I've recently rewatched it and it is still miles and away better than the shit that passes for Star Trek today. Yeah it took a while for the show to catch it's stride but the seeds for greatness were there from the first minute. The writing got better and the acting definitely got much better, but it really wasn't as bad as all of you are making it out to be. There were some great episodes even in S1, and for what it's worth it was really, really good "Star Trek" by that I mean it gave hope that one day humanity can rise above the petty tribalism of today.

Yeah, trying to watch Discovery right now, and struggling to make it through the Fascist alternate universe stories.

Firefly was canceled after just one season. WORST. DECISION. EVAR.

Watched Firefly because of all the fuss about it years after it was cancelled and I can say I never understood what all the fuss was about after painfully slogging through the whole thing and I'm a BIG sci-fi fan.

Might have something to do with the weird ass wild-west vibe hooking a particular nostalgic US audience?

Great world building, great cast, great characters, fun stories, fun dialog. Just so much to love about that show. It's a gorram shame that shiny show was canceled. Browncoats forever! I'll be in my bunk.

Hate is too strong, but it really is very weak. One of the things which annoyed the hell out of me as I was watching it the very first time was a large number of episodes in season one were basically rewrites of episodes from ST:TOS. I remember thinking, "I've been waiting for over a decade for this and you can't even do original epsidoes?"

Netflix once willing to take chances and carry unique series, is now gravitating towards the tried and true broadcast network practice of only carrying pap that appeals to great swaths of the unwashed.

I loved season 1 of Altered Carbon. Season 2 just didn't do it for me. Not sure if it was because of the main actor or not, but to me, it just wasn't as good. Was still hoping for a season 3 though.

As far as I know there are only three Altered Carbon novels. The first season did the first novel pretty well, it was very enjoyable. The second season was a mish-mash of the second and third novels which really did a poor job of covering the materials. So, maybe they weren't up for doing original material in the AC universe?

Honestly I'm surprised Netflix even attempted to turn the Altered Carbon novels into a show... in order to do it 'correctly' you'd need an insane effects budget, multiple sets of great actors(for body swaps), multiple alien location sets, a whole portion in outer space, etc. etc. it was a bad choice to do half-assed, and died a half assed death because of it.

Netflix has been doing the shotgun method for years though, pumping out all sorts of content in all genres, hoping people watch enough to support whatever internal metrics they have. I'm sure AC was a success as far as their investors are concerned.

The first season of ST:TNG was pretty awful. Imagine if they canned it after that.

That said, if you haven't gotten in right by S2, well I can't blame Netflix for cancelling you. Total shame about Altered Carbon. It was great. The more recent SciFi shows on Netflix haven't been as good, like Away and Another Life.

Totes agreed all around. Actually, I think the first three seasons of TNG aren't very good. They get progressively better each season but it's really not until S4 they really hit their stride. Loved the first season of AC, second was ok, but I'm not a fan of Anthony Mackie so it was probably more about him than the story. The premise for AC is great, there's so much you can do with it. They're nuts not to give it a few more seasons.

Oh well, sci-fi and fantasy fans virtually always get the shaft on TV content. Yet GoT shows how, when it's done right and has sufficient budget, it can be hugely successful.

Bad example. ST:TNG's first season was horrid. But Trek fans were so starved for content it didn't matter much. From the wiki:

"The Next Generation's average of 20 million viewers often exceeded both existing syndication successes such as Wheel of Fortune and network hits including Cheers and L.A. Law. Benefiting in part from many stations' decision to air each new episode twice in a week, it consistently ranked in the top ten among hour-long dramas, and networks could not prevent affiliates from preempting their shows with The Next Generation or other dramas that imitated its syndication strategy."
