Michel Ancel Leaving the Games Industry

In a post on Instagram, Michel Ancel announces he's leaving the game industry after over 30 years (thanks VGC). Ancel, who created the Rayman series and Beyond Good and Evil, announces he's going to pursue his other passion, wildlife. He offers assurances to gamers that the upcoming Beyond Good and Evil 2 and PlayStation game Wild will remain the right track as "the teams are autonomous and the projects are going super well." Ubisoft follows up on this by promising to show off Beyond Good & Evil 2 gameplay next year, so take whatever reassurance from that you prefer. Here's Michel's post:
WoW ! This little guy has many things to teach to Sam Fisher !
Today is very special for me. After more than 30 years, I’ve decided to stop working on video games and fully focus on my second passion : Wild Life !

My new project takes place in the real world and consists in a wild life open sanctuary dedicated to education , nature lovers and ... wild animals.

🎮🎮🎮 video games part 🎮🎮🎮

Many of you might want to know what will happen to Wild and BGE2. No worries, since many months now the teams are autonomous and the projects are going super well. Beautiful things to be seen soon.

May the fox be with you

Meh, I would have worried about that ten years ago when I still had hopes for a proper Beyond Good & Evil 2, after all the empty promises from UbiSoft but I just stopped caring a long time ago.
Now we donce.

I can't talk to the reasons for this individual leaving but...

Forget that shit, what about basic professionalism?

People who could barely function in a conventional working environment being hailed as "stars" while people around them work ocean's of overtime to execute their vision?

There aren't many professionals working in games. Even within the companies juvenile behaviour is encouraged as HR companies are told to hire "talent" and don't really evaluate potential staff as "professionals".

In art school we were taught that no matter how talented you are if you don't work on interpersonal skills you won't last in any creative field. Games development is swimming in people who didn't learn this part.

I'm taking his words at face value until otherwise proven different. I would have got out of the game industry long before 30 years.

If you want to live completely free, you should move to Somalia. There aren't any thought police there. In fact, there aren't any police there at all.

pfft. He doesn't need to go that far. There are plenty of places in the US where you can get an off the grid homestead and you're essentially on your own. You can't really use the internet if you don't want to be exposed to the thought police, or new ideas, or different opinions, or other people's beliefs. Shrug.

I'm hoping Ancel invests his times well and makes a difference. Everything seems like it's burning these years.

Not sure why folks are jumping to the conclusion that this has something to do with Ubisoft's harassment issues... 30+ years means the guy could simply want to move on.

Agreed. He's retiring. He's likely made a fortune, he's nearing 50 which is a rare age for game devs, and he's done all he felt he needed to.

On to the dream life.

You are right and we need to stop this ourselves because this is the same shit we blame the media for doing, connecting what seems like reasonable dots, but that doesn't make it true.

Before you can connect those reasonable dots, the dots have to exist. Arguing because other high profile Ubisoft people were ousted due to improper behavior doesn't mean every high profile person deciding to leave the company is automatically guilty of bad behavior. That's called prejudice and stereotyping. Or, as Stephen Colbert calls it, the truthiness of the situation. You know Michel Ancel is guilty because your gut told you so.

That's probably a factor, particularly with Ubisoft producing. Still it's better to help wildlife anyway.

Wow. But China is also restricting people to what China thinks is best (like more and more western countries do, too). Let's just say that in different ways and to different degrees in the different countries, the freedom of opinions is getting smaller pretty much everywhere on this planet.
