I no yesterday I read a lot of "NV lied the 3080 isn't x faster than a 2080TI", well in some cases it is.

Most of that talk is made up anyway. At the live reveal of the RTX 30xx series, Huang never made a comparison between the 2080Ti and the 3080. He only said that the RTX 3080 would be (up to) twice as fast as the RTX 2080 (non-Ti and non-S) which turned out to be true in certain scenarios. On average it is "only" +70% faster but there are RT/DLSS scenarios where the RTX 3080 really outshines the RTX 2080.

When it comes to the RTX 2080Ti, Huang said that the RTX 3070 would be faster. At the same time this slide was shown in the stream that says "faster than 2080Ti" but it actually looks more like the RTX 3070 and 2080Ti are on equal footing so the RTX 3070 will probably be marginally faster than the 2080Ti in select scenarios. It will also be quite a bit slower in others, namely whenever it runs out of VRAM (the 3GB less is going to hurt in certain situations).

On a whole I do not know why this is surprising to anyone. Hardware makers always advertise best case scenarios in these reveals just like car makers advertise best case fuel consumption or like game developers don't advertise their buggy messes. It's called marketing. We will find out mid October where the RTX 3070 settles in. I wouldn't doubt nVidia's claims. The RTX 3080 is about +30% faster than the RTX 2080Ti so the RTX 3070 would fit right in on the RTX 2080Ti level, give or take 5%.

There is also a historical case to be made here. The GTX 970 was about as fast as the GTX 780Ti (remember there was no GTX 8xx series) and the GTX 1070 was on par with the GTX 980Ti. The (x)x70 part has an established track record of replacing the Ti of a previous generation. If the RTX 3070 reaches RTX 2080Ti performance just as nVidia said it should not really surprise anyone.

Yup. Many of the angry people I see keep demanding it be twice the speed of the 2080ti, which was never the claim.

Most then talk about AMD. I don't get it. Buy what's best, don't root for corporations blindly.

No.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

From every review I watched, the 3080 is a monster. Is it QUITE as much faster than a 2080ti as claimed? in MOST cases, YES. That's ignoring RTX. Those possible double-ram versions that accidentally showed up have me hopeful that maybe we'll see them pop up sooner than later. It's VERY unlikely they accidentally released info for cards a year away.

I'm not sure if I'll go for a 20gb version or not. It'll really depend on the price premium. It'd be nice, but the 10gb will likely be just fine for anything coming in the next few years.

I really have to wonder about these tech magazines that constant spout unconfirmed nonsense. Like in the one talking about Gigabyte cards coming out, they consistently refer to the 3070 being faster than the 2080ti and I after looking at the 3080 test results that compared it to the 2080ti I have great doubts that it is true.
Personally I see the 3070 somewhere between a 2080 super and the 2080ti at best. Nothing worse than constantly spouting marketing nonsense.

One thing that is blurring these lines now is "traditional raster", "rtx", "dlss". Perhaps one can cherry pick a situation where the 3070 can equal a 2080ti. I no yesterday I read a lot of "NV lied the 3080 isn't x faster than a 2080TI", well in some cases it is.

The big one was that they said "2x as fast as the 2080" which is... only true in 100% ray-traced Quake 2. Only situation. In almost all other cases it's 50% faster, which is *great* enough that they had no reason to be misleading. But they just had to reach out there.

Never trust these benchmark reports until the dust has settled. Foolish to jump on the bandwagon before making sure it takes you to the right spot.

I will decide if it is marketing nonsense AFTER the release of the 3070.
Also: the 3080 is about as fast as many tech magazines thought it would be, and it is almost in all cases CHEAPER than they expected, too.
