Riot Hires Anti-Cheat Expert

A post on TwitLonger from Mohamed "GamerDoc" Al-Sharifi explains he's been hired by Riot to become a professional cheat fighter (thanks Eurogamer.net). This is something he's been doing on his own in Overwatch and Valorant, as discussed in this Vice article. He explains how this is a second chance in life after brushes with homelessness following his flight from his war-torn original home of Iraq. Here's a bit on what he'll be doing:
Yes, finally I can say that I been working closely with riot to the point they asked me to join them in the fight against cheaters, and of course, I said yes, the entire Vanguard team are filled with the same passion as me I really love their work and fight against cheaters, and I am honoured to be part of that team I will work extremely hard to make sure I protect all the players and make sure we protect the competitive integrity of riots titles, I will be exclusively be working for Riot and not other titles anymore I hope many of you understand why

I am grateful to have been given a second chance in life; it was like almost four months ago; I almost went homeless again. Thanks to all of you guys and supporting my work, I got offered a job, and this is just my passion so I couldn't have asked for a better dream job; its everything I ever wanted, and I am eternally grateful for it.

You can have privately run servers and still have a master server for auth. It's literally the way id and valve did it when they ushered in the MP FPS golden era.

I don't think those games had unlocks or persistent stats, though. I think the point is that privately run servers could send false data to level people up or give free coins or whatever.

It seems to me that stats and unlocks go hand in hand with servers that have cheaters.

Well CS has that stuff now, and you can still run private servers for GO.

You know what else helps fighting cheaters? Well..

Anyone else remember Wolf:ET? It had unlocks that opened up as the campaign unfolded, and then reset after a side won. I'd love to see that again. Imagine 4-6 classes in an FPS, and as you play, you can unlock extra abilities etc. Server balancing on map completion, all stats reset after game finishes.

Believe it or not, it is not extremely hard to write good anti-cheat software and AI is even getting better at it than we are. The problem is good anticheat software puts a huge load on the server if it is run in realtime as putting it in the client is an open invitation to the cheaters. So many developers either run a very limited detection program on the server or run it in batch mode at low server usage times . I remember reading an article about a developer included in their client a method of detecting if a player was using an aimbot, Within a day or two the aimbot writers had patches out to circumvent the client code. It is an unending battle.

But it is good to see someone who really cares get a job like that.

You would think that the large companies like Activision and EA would have teams that purchase cheat software and reverse engineer it as soon as it comes out in order to patch vulnerabilities.

Someone needs to hire this guy too. He's been fighting "sheaters" in his own way for the past year or so, and doing a bang up and hilarious job.
