The nation and the NFL screwed the pooch royally on how they treated him. At least he got a nice settlement from the NFL and he'll make some more money licensing his likeness to Madden.

He might not be a Hall of Famer but he is (or certainly was) easily better than 1/3 (possibly more) of the starters in the league. He might not be a typical "hero", but the actions of others effectively turned him into a martyr.

Kaepernick made a statement with a silent, non-violent protest, calling for justice and was shredded by the white power structure for it. I've never had any interest in EA Sports games, but I give them significant credit for sticking their neck out on this. I hope they are rewarded for it.

While I agree with that because as a veteran, I never really minded about the kneeling. I served so people could speak their mind and protest the ways they wanted too (Plus, there is no law against the Flag Code or any other law in the US Constitution or otherwise that states you cannot kneel or have to stand at attention during the US National Anthem.) But, when some teams came back recently and offered to watch his workouts, he made some pretty bold demands for someone who wanted to come back into the fold. I'm sorry but I cannot just tell my employer where I want to meet and then change it at the last minute, how I'm going to conduct business and override your job offer with a list of my own demands. There's only so much you can request before employers will shop somewhere else.

Yeah, not all of Colin's choices have been great ones. Not sure if his ambition swelled or if he has too many people whispering in his ear, or what -- but the shenanigans around the tryout thing was a debacle, although I'm sure the NFL shares in some of the blame for that. Basically my spin is he is a decent guy who tried to do what he saw as the right thing and his career was ruined for it. He has done more things deserving praise than he has things which deserve criticism.

Are you a veteran? I am and I don't feel disparaged in any way. And from what I've seen most of the veteran community believes freedom of speech (you know, the 1st Amendment) is exactly what they were interested in supporting.
