If I were to buy a 3090 (Not saying I would since I game at 1080p)... I would probably go with a liquid cooled model to avoid taking up 3 slots.

I still might, depending on how Cyberpunk benches with Ray-tracing. While the 3090 would be mass overkill for 1080p, it might be somewhat future-proofing for Ray Tracing at 1080p... meaning the card would last several years, still.

Obviously I've poo-pooed Ray Tracing when it first came out... and technically... I still really don't care about it all that much. But it takes a killer app like Cyberpunk and more general market support before I'd think of getting on board. I'll just say I wouldn't spend my money to be an early adopter. And even with cyberpunk... it still may be too early and I'd wait for the 4xxx series. Depends on how cyberpunk will look and run on my GTX 1070 @ 1080p.

wow. 20 gigs of vram. Would people's eyes actually be able to discern that much texture detail?

And that 3090 is thiccccc! Must be a couple inches longer than a 2080, an inch wider, and it takes up 3 mobo slots!

I am interested in 20 GB of VRAM but also want a silent pc - and if it is true that the boards run about as hot as the sun... Well... We will see. I will wait for reviews of this and Big Navi and will decide then.

This is fact. They designed it for TSMC's much more power efficient 7nm, alas they got stuck with Samsung's inferior 10nm++ ( so called "8nm" ) because their maneuvering and manipulations to get better prices at TSMC utterly backfired.

What follows is rumor. Nvidia got scared about RDNA2's perf and power efficiency and pushed Ampere beyond it's ideal power usage/perf point on the curve to keep ahead knowing AMD would have no choice but to push theirs into the redzone too if they wanted to keep up.

Combine both and you get one hot & loud GPU.

Imho this generation is a dud with the consoles on the horizon. Games ported from consoles are gonna begin making Ampere/RDNA2 and older GPUs look like dinosaurs when they start taking full advantage of the decompression and SSD DMA fast access in a year or 2. Any GPU not equipped with similar logic is gonna get left behind early during the next consoles cycle. Ampere most probably won't have that and RDNA2 might be more likely to have it seeing as AMD helped design the consoles, altho it's not guaranteed ( that might be one of their aces in the hole ). Which leads to...

Nvidia Hopper on TSMC's 5nm in 2021. I wouldn't wait for RDNA3.

Ampere is likely to age just as well as Kepler ( 600/700 series ) did.
