Oculus Adding Facebook Account Requirement

The Oculus Blog announces that starting in October everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will be required to log in to Facebook (thanks Hypothermia). As of the beginning of 2023, all Oculus owners will need a Facebook account to retain full functionality of their headsets. Here's the summary of the lengthy update:
What changes are coming to accounts on Oculus?
Starting in October 2020:

  • Everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.
  • If you are an existing user and already have an Oculus account, you will have the option to log in with Facebook and merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts.
  • If you are an existing user and choose not to merge your accounts, you can continue using your Oculus account for two years.

Starting In January 2023:

  • We will end support for Oculus accounts.
  • If you choose not to merge your accounts at that time, you can continue using your device, but full functionality will require a Facebook account.
  • We will take steps to allow you to keep using content you have purchased, though some games and apps may no longer work. This could be because they require a Facebook account or because a developer has chosen to no longer support the app or game you purchased.

All future unreleased Oculus devices will require a Facebook account, even if you already have an Oculus account.

I can't stand Facebook enough that I will never create a FB account. My rift probably won't last another two years anyway.

Yeah, I assume they're moving fully into the Quest space, where they have no competition, and just saying sayonara to the Rift/Rift S. They have to know how well this is going to go over.

Absolutely, anyone who touched an Oculus after Zuck acquired the company had to know this was coming. Now to see what kind of Facebook integration there will be on the new Xbox...

LOL! This is just plain stupid... I'm glad I don't have an Oculus or I would have been totally frustrated.

Go read a few comments at the bottom of the blog page, everyone disagree. Incoming backlash... can't wait to see how this will end.

Especially as you have to bind your purchased games from Oculus store to your facebook account now, and to use the store, you need a facebook account. Meaning you have to bind credit card data to your facebook account....

There is a reason why Steam is become a "de facto standard", some of the Steam/Valve haters should take notes.

The credit card worries me the least. They can’t do anything w/it.
The customer that I just set up a new iPhone SE for was excited about the free year of Apple TV. But the second it required her to enter a credit card, like most free offers do, she balked.
But mysteriously doesn’t mind the fact that Netflix and Amazon has her cc.

I have a Quest. It's a nice device. Here's hoping someone finds a "creative" way around this when the time comes. I loath Facebook.

This crap is why I stopped installing Geforce Experience, when they started forcing you to create an account to use the product you bought.

I haven't bought a VR device yet, but looks like I'll be heading for something other than Oculus.

You don't have to create an account with GFE. You can log in using several other accounts like your google account which is what I do.

Not all that surprised, I figured this was going to happen much sooner actually. But still BS though.

Since I backed Oculus when they were on Kickstarter I got my CV1 (which works quite well with HL: Alyx BTW) for free, but I did pay for the DK1 (part of the kickstarter) and DK2. I've been thinking of going with an Index for a while now and it looks like I definitely will now. I used to have a FB account back when the site was new (around 2004 or 2005) and before it became ultra popular, but once it did I deactivated my account b/c it was getting real lame at that point. I said I will never go back and I'm sticking to it.

LOL is right... Those are from people already logged in and using Facebook to post dumb comments everywhere they go online. They have long since been ensnared by the corp with a billion tentacles, so to see them speak against that same system being used for Oculus is laughable, indeed. (BTW, I don't even see that garbage on my main browser, I had to load the page up in Edge to see what you were referring to.)

Back up and get a sense of the bigger picture here... Facebook doesn't give a shit about that very small group of early adopters. Making them happy isn't what is going to sustain VR as a business. This is a step toward reaching the real audience, the mainstream masses that probably have no experience with VR and/or don't yet fully understand what it is, IF they have even heard of it. 99% of those people are on Facebook anyway and use it on a daily basis, so not only will they not think twice about this requirement, they will actually be grateful for the convenience of it.

I've been considering getting a VR headset in the near future, but this is definitely one mark against Oculus. This is despite the fact that I actually have a Facebook account (for Messenger). I don't see why I need my Facebook account to use a VR headset.
