Oculus Adding Facebook Account Requirement

The Oculus Blog announces that starting in October everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will be required to log in to Facebook (thanks Hypothermia). As of the beginning of 2023, all Oculus owners will need a Facebook account to retain full functionality of their headsets. Here's the summary of the lengthy update:
What changes are coming to accounts on Oculus?
Starting in October 2020:

  • Everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.
  • If you are an existing user and already have an Oculus account, you will have the option to log in with Facebook and merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts.
  • If you are an existing user and choose not to merge your accounts, you can continue using your Oculus account for two years.

Starting In January 2023:

  • We will end support for Oculus accounts.
  • If you choose not to merge your accounts at that time, you can continue using your device, but full functionality will require a Facebook account.
  • We will take steps to allow you to keep using content you have purchased, though some games and apps may no longer work. This could be because they require a Facebook account or because a developer has chosen to no longer support the app or game you purchased.

All future unreleased Oculus devices will require a Facebook account, even if you already have an Oculus account.

LOL! This is just plain stupid... I'm glad I don't have an Oculus or I would have been totally frustrated.

Go read a few comments at the bottom of the blog page, everyone disagree. Incoming backlash... can't wait to see how this will end.

LOL is right... Those are from people already logged in and using Facebook to post dumb comments everywhere they go online. They have long since been ensnared by the corp with a billion tentacles, so to see them speak against that same system being used for Oculus is laughable, indeed. (BTW, I don't even see that garbage on my main browser, I had to load the page up in Edge to see what you were referring to.)

Back up and get a sense of the bigger picture here... Facebook doesn't give a shit about that very small group of early adopters. Making them happy isn't what is going to sustain VR as a business. This is a step toward reaching the real audience, the mainstream masses that probably have no experience with VR and/or don't yet fully understand what it is, IF they have even heard of it. 99% of those people are on Facebook anyway and use it on a daily basis, so not only will they not think twice about this requirement, they will actually be grateful for the convenience of it.
