Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition Preloads and Issues

A post on Steam announces that preloads are now underway for Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition in advance of tomorrow's release of the PC edition of Guerrilla's action/adventure game. They offer a recommendation on the proper video drivers to support the game, and also highlight more of what expect between a one-time shader compilation and a few known issues they are still working on:
Initial Shader Compilation
In order to improve performance during play, we’ve implemented a one-time initial shader compilation before the game starts for the first time. This can take an average of 10-15 minutes for most systems to complete. Once it’s completed, you won’t have to do it again unless you make a significant hardware change or update your video drivers. We’re looking into ways to further optimize this process.

Known Issues

  • Anisotropic Filtering settings are not working. This is a high priority issue for us to resolve.
  • Some systems may experience a brief stutter during general world traversal, UI updates, quest updates, or camera swaps in cutscenes. This is a high priority issue for us to investigate.
  • Some animations are designed to only refresh at 30fps even if the game is running at a much higher frame rate. We are exploring how we can improve this with a future update.

Shader Compilation process does not properly verify remaining storage space on user PC and can result in crashes if the user’s storage drive is low on space (compilation process requires additional ~2GB storage space).

And you're waiting for what, exactly?

You're kidding of course, but I'm 40% convinced I can finish up the heavy hitter AAA games I have installed, and clear up enough space to put on one of these newer insane-sized games, without having to buy a second M2 SSD (1TB+) and just have this current M2 SSD sitting around borderline useless. My current MB doesn't support full speed for 2 M2s plugged in simultaneously, and I'm trying to hold off building an entire new system for a couple years if I can.

More on topic: Horizon Zero Dawn looks good, but not delete my half finished games and wipe it all down to nothing for 1 game good.

No stuttering, and no crashes after a few hours o game f play. So far, the game and story have been great and the graphics in this game are really incredible looking. Some of the beast I have seen in a game in a while.
Have you tried the in game benchmark in the options menu?
Maybe I'm an outlier, who knows.

I'm also enjoying the game and story and great graphics.

no, Only the initial one that setup the system that took about 5 mins.

On my geforce 2080 graphics card with latest drivers specifically for horizon zero dawn, 32gb ram, nvme SSD, and i9-9900 running the built in benchmark it's pretty dang choppy at 1080p and ultra settings. Min FPS is only 16, although it says average is 57.

Didn’t Windows 7 also default to one graph for all CPUs versus one graph per cpu?
Could be, I don't recall, it's been so long lol

That's abysmal for your system at 1080p. I would expect that to be even slightly low for 4k, given the game is a few years old.

It seems they still have a lot of work to do on this port. I'm pretty disappointed, as I was really excited for this game.

DF, is a joke. Did you even watch their review? The morons reviewed the game with a 4K TV, then on top of that the idiots figured out they had the GPU clocking at 8X when it should be at 16X. What a fucking joke that review is. They lost all credibility once I saw all that crap.

If they are messing around with the hardware and forgetting about the clocking speeds, what other bullshit have they messed with and forgotten?. No that review was utter trash, for starters why are they even messing with the hardware settings? they should have restarted the entire review on a clean system. No way I'm taking that review serious.

I'm definitely looking forward to checking out this game on PC, but after reading about the issues, I think I'll wait a bit for some patches. Perhaps by the time the 3080ti comes out, much of it will fixed, and at the very least, the faster video card should mitigate some of the poor performance.

It's a shame that it is running an older version of the Decima engine and doesn't support DLSS2 (like Death Stranding). An engine upgrade after release is unlikely.

Second, great respect for Guerrilla that they mention this before the release. This will cost them a lot of day-one sales, meaning they now rely heavily on early reviews / user scores for those former day-one buyers to hop on the bandwagon.

I bought the game yesterday. Pre-loaded it. All before this statement. I'm most worried about the Anistrophic Filtering not working ("not working", like wtf?). If there's one graphical issue that bothers me, it's washed out textures.

Shaders are written in plaintext - the shader a GPU needs is compiled for whatever shader language your GPU uses, hint: it ain't plaintext.
So now you have 3 different GPU makers, and thousands of different driver/gpu/OS variations.. you need to include 1000 differently compiled shaders.. or you do it on start-up

Also, and maybe way worse. Games with pre-compiled shaders can break very easily when a driver changes something. If you compile on run-time, driver can handle this and you end with way better performance.

Thanks man. Makes some sense now! It is forever a mystery of the ages how someone who's been playing PC games since 1990 knows remarkably little about the technical stuff

Man, train wreck does not even begin to describe it. And I was kinda interested at first...

The main concerns of the Digital Foundry review are mentioned as high priority fixes, so at least they're acknowledging them. If this was a typical Square Enix release we'd get the game in this state (if we're lucky) and have to guess on whether a patch at all was coming.

In many (most?) games, I think shaders are compiled as they are needed during gameplay, which can reduce performance. A one-time shader compilation process can improve performance but it does have the drawback of having to recompile if there are hardware or driver changes, as the post states. If you don't know, a shader is just a program that runs on the GPU that performs calculations which are used to apply effects to game assets, basically.
