Outage Update

Just want to give a quick update on the status of the outage at the Blue Tower. We are still without power or cell phone access, and the power company is not offering a time when things are expected to return, which is obviously not a good sign. It turns out there was a tornado in the area which explains the devastation. We're keeping our fingers crossed that things will return, and I'll try and let you know what's up as soon as I can. Sorry for the down time.

WAIT! Isn't it obvious what was happening and who is behind this?!

Star Citizen is using Amazon's Lumberjack engine, and it was some bot using Amazon DDOSing the site...

You need 8gb VRAM .. never, ever go below that. Anything less than 8gb will give you issues in modern games, at 1440p anyway. But even at 1080p it can rear its ugly head... it's got nothing to do with FPS, if you run out of VRAM most DX12 games will just crash. And for RAM, not below 16GB
Gtk, thanks. I've never even tried dx12 or 1440p, so I can just run it at 1080p. I'll still wait to pick up a new video card, iirc the new cards come out in about 2 months. I probably won't be able to save more than $100 on mobo and cpu, which I would get the benefit of for the next 4 months. It's strange to hear dx12 just crashes, if I had an issue in dx 9-11 we could just adjust settings like AA or Shadows. I most meant being able to run at 60fps as being a smooth measure with most settings at high. Sounds like I've over estimated the power of the 3700x, RAM, and GTX1060. Thanks

It's true - 8 GB is the minimum for current gaming at 1440p. The1060 is still alright at 1080p, though. I hope AMD and Nvidia will offer good value with AT LEAST 8 GB video memory with their new cards that should be coming out in a month or two. We will see. And 16 GB system RAM are also a good call for the next few years. The Ryzen 3700x is a good choice - maybe get a mainboard with the new B550 chipset, too. They are pretty cheap but some are really, really good and you could even run a new 4700x on them.

Atlantic hurricane season on pace to be one of the worst in recorded history

The Atlantic hurricane season is on pace to become one of the worst in recorded history, forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center said on Thursday.

Forecasters have predicted an active season because of warmer ocean temperatures driven by climate change, but the 2020 season is on pace to break records.

The hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30., is set to have 19 to 25 named storms, with 7 to 11 of those storms to develop into hurricanes.

And in more good news....

From my own experience I can at least tell you that you won't ever know why it crashed. If the page-file is full and it needs more memory for VRAM it will just go poof. And some games tell you what they need. (Warhammer 2, even in DX11 has this problem that on all ultra you need 7.9GB of VRAM at 1440p, there is no wiggle room there for higher res textures) and Death Stranding for example just goes to the desktop when VRAM runs out and you don't have a very large (2-4GB) pagefile set.

I watched it a couple of months ago. It was just *okay*. I thought there were a lot of missed opportunities. Also, Soderburgh's disjointed style annoyed me.
It has a couple of moments, but yeah overall it is only "okay".
Gtk, I didn't realize it was Soderburgh and I'm not a fan of the style either.

Did you guys really hate Ocean's 11 or something?

Let me give a stronger endorsement for Contagion: it is a taut, gripping, exquisitely well made thriller. It was also remarkably prescient in several areas, particularly with respect to misinformation and hucksters hawking miracle drugs *cough*hydroxychloroquine*cough*. I'm also struggling to understand what might be considered disjointed about the film's storytelling; the only thing that comes to mind is the use of several dialogue-less, music-driven montages that quickly cut between multiple scenes/points of view to visually tell the story of the disease's spread. If that's a negative however, I would say that we have VERY different tastes in movies.

Watch the opening couple of minutes of the film, and in the likely event you're hooked, then give the film a watch: as awful as our reality is at the moment, Covid-19 isn't nearly as horrific as the disease in Contagion.

I suppose it could be argued that it's missing the "redundant" part of RAID.

Also, Linus is so young in that vid. SO YOUNG.
That would be my argument, missing the redundant part.
I understand the definitions, I'm not saying it's non raid out of ignorance. I'm saying it based data redundancy, and how many people don't realize they just doubled their chance of catastrophic data loss in case of hardware failure if they use RAID 0.
On the other hand, it's named "Raid 0" as in "Zero RAID" or "Zero Redundancy." Perhaps that's why they started with "0" instead of "1?"

RAID 0 is definitely trading performance for stability.

The 79 Best Pandemic Movies to Binge in Quarantine

Whilst they're not all about pandemics per se, most are in the mass infection + death and destruction category.

For me, The Andromeda Strain is still the best flick hands down in this category. Then some of the classics like The Omega Man, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and the newer Train to Busan .

A really good one not on that list is The Satan Bug....

1060 can handle most latest titles at 1440p, but a lot of them need a lot of graphics settings tweaking and it really doesn't hurt to use freesync/gsync.

Not gonna last I'm afraid tho. As for me, probably gonna endure it until Hopper 5nm in 2021 equipped with something to compete with the new on the fly SSD DMA compression/decompression thingamajig. I doubt Ampere or RDNA2 has that, but Hopper and RDNA3 should.

I don't expect neither Ampere nor RDNA2 to age well if they lack this feature...

I Should've spent a little more and grabbed a 1070 but it wouldn't have fit in my m-itx case. I barely squeezed the 1060 in there.
