Outage Update

Just want to give a quick update on the status of the outage at the Blue Tower. We are still without power or cell phone access, and the power company is not offering a time when things are expected to return, which is obviously not a good sign. It turns out there was a tornado in the area which explains the devastation. We're keeping our fingers crossed that things will return, and I'll try and let you know what's up as soon as I can. Sorry for the down time.

It has a couple of moments, but yeah overall it is only "okay".
Gtk, I didn't realize it was Soderburgh and I'm not a fan of the style either.

Oh, that's probably true, there are some seriously intense texture packages now days. I don't play big competitive mboa and CS pvp type games, will see if I can squeak by. Do you think I will need 8gb to get 60fps@1440p in single player games like HZD, Fallout 4 (so many mods, so little time) and really looking forward to Steam versions of Outer Worlds and Control?

You need 8gb VRAM .. never, ever go below that. Anything less than 8gb will give you issues in modern games, at 1440p anyway. But even at 1080p it can rear its ugly head... it's got nothing to do with FPS, if you run out of VRAM most DX12 games will just crash. And for RAM, not below 16GB
Gtk, thanks. I've never even tried dx12 or 1440p, so I can just run it at 1080p. I'll still wait to pick up a new video card, iirc the new cards come out in about 2 months. I probably won't be able to save more than $100 on mobo and cpu, which I would get the benefit of for the next 4 months. It's strange to hear dx12 just crashes, if I had an issue in dx 9-11 we could just adjust settings like AA or Shadows. I most meant being able to run at 60fps as being a smooth measure with most settings at high. Sounds like I've over estimated the power of the 3700x, RAM, and GTX1060. Thanks

Basically it is a "performance only" RAID. So, it depends on your definition of RAID. If the definition includes redundancy than RAID 0 isn't.

A reminder, for Horizon Zero Dawn, nvidia driver 451.67 (released 7-9) is the one with official support.
I initially didn't install latest driver for death stranding and had terrible graphical bugs that went away when I installed the newer driver. So I wanted to make sure that didn't happen again for me for this game.

The 79 Best Pandemic Movies to Binge in Quarantine

Whilst they're not all about pandemics per se, most are in the mass infection + death and destruction category.

For me, The Andromeda Strain is still the best flick hands down in this category. Then some of the classics like The Omega Man, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and the newer Train to Busan .

A really good one not on that list is The Satan Bug....

Steam's features haven't been very stable over the past few months because of the pandemic. None of my game updates auto install anymore. I suspect that they're throttling in some regions. Other features like chat are also having issues. And don't get me started on the streaming. It's basically useless right now because of the latency, so I'll typically use Discord. There's hardly any latency when streaming through Discord.

Probably a silly question but what are your feelings on software raid.
Raid 0 isn't raid, just doubles your chance of catastrophic data loss.
Also with modern SSDs capping out the NVME PCIE bus (and almost capping the upgraded standard that's just starting to hit the market, PCIE 4) , doesn't make sense to do RAID0 in nearly all scenarios.

OMG apparently going by replies, it's because valve's encryption sucks so bad, not because of storage speed. I'm going to see how long it takes on my SSD, and if everyone is right, from now on I won't be preloading because downloading will be faster on my connection.
Come on valve, wheel those chairs over to the fix up crappy tech bits of steam.

If I treat this as a catch all topic:
Just got my GMG key for Horizon zero dawn and it's letting me preload.
This time I'm putting the release on my NVME SSD, so hopefully when it unlocks it doesn't take a bunch of hours to decrypt like death stranding. If this doesn't make the decrypt faster, then I'll just be waiting to download until it actually unlocks on my next purchase since that seems like it would be faster.

Also, thinking about streaming my play on twitch just for fun, since I have a modern gaming PC after a number of years with an old one. So I'm looking up that stuff. I have a lifetime license for xsplit, so...

If this shouldn't be a catchall topic, feel free to delete.
At least you'll know the time it takes to unzip, unpack and unencrypt won't be due to storage.
I bet you're still gonna be waiting an hour or more for the 70 gig preload to sort itself out.

Serious Note:
Does storage speed have much to do with preload unpackingunzippingunencrypting speed.

Largely...no. That is a function of the application's use of the CPU (well, not direct usage but you get the gist). Now reading from itself to write to itself can cause a speed differential if someone were using a sole spinning rust disk because seek times have always sucked on mechanical drives compared to flash or even RAM drives. However, setting up a pair, or more, of 1TB SSDs in a RAID0 config for game storage would be largely underserved because the slowass decryption application can't feed it data fast enough. But 1TB SSDs are cheap enough now that I have to wonder why wouldn't you do that.
I don't see how there would be much advantage, if any, by raid 0'ing either regular SATA SSD drives or the new nvme m.2 pcie drives.
