Yup, I look forward to the time when I can by 15 or 20 games at once without having to buy them one at a time.
Those are amateur numbers. I won't go shopping If I can't buy 77 to 154 games at a pop.

I have never bought that many games at once. I think at most I usually get 3-4, unless it's part of a Humble Bundle.

When done well, I really enjoy achievements. I don't usually seek out ones that aren't fun, and I don't really have a need to be a completionist, but some things are fun to get without trying, and others are fun to get by changing your play style.

Achievements can often point out ways of playing the game I hadn't considered. FTL comes to mind.

Do people still play games just for the games sake, or do they play for the achievements.

According to the Bartle taxonomy of player types, four categories appeal to most gamers.

1. Achievers, also known as "Diamonds" (♦), are players who prefer to gain "points," levels, equipment, and other concrete measurements of succeeding in a game. They will go to great lengths to achieve rewards that are merely cosmetic.
2. Explorers, also known as "Spades" (♠) for their tendency to dig around, are players who prefer discovering areas and immerse themselves in the game world. They are often annoyed by time-restricted missions that prevent them from traversing at their own pace. They enjoy finding glitches or a hidden easter egg.
3. Socializers or "Hearts" (♥) are a multitude of gamers who choose to play games for the social aspect, rather than the actual game itself. They gain the most enjoyment by interacting with other players, and sometimes, computer-controlled characters with personality. The game is merely a tool they use to meet others in-game or outside of it.
4. Killers or "Clubs" (♣) is a very accurate moniker for what the Killer likes. They thrive on competition with other players and prefer fighting them to scripted computer-controlled opponents. In extreme settings, they also want to inflict grief and suffering upon others.

Yes, there's a thriving segment of gamers who are Achievers. For me, Explorers is my jam coupled with a great story.

I'm Explorer in SP, and Killer in MP.

I've played CS for 20 years now, never in the competitive mode, just casual and mostly GunGame DM. I get nothing from it but the satisfaction of winning.
And nowadays I'm playing... Overwatch... Deatmatch for like 3 hours a night. You wouldn't think a Zen could reliably win #1st place in these, but I do, and the challenge of that is what makes it fun. The hackusations are my pay.

But my true love is narrative heavy SP, I don't want to grind or collect gear/loot. I just want to wander around talking to characters and solving problems.
I just beat the newly released Beyond a Steel Sky with 12 hours played... It probably could have been a 4 hour game if I didn't exhaust every dialog option and cram myself into every nook and cranny in the game, but that's how I do... the achievements weren't even working.

I play the game because I genuinely like or love the game. However, if I think I can get the achievements, I go for as many as I can reasonably get. I do, however, dislike it when games have 55,634 achievements and/or add new achievements that are DLC only. Now that I have a few "perfect games", I have to admit, I like seeing that number go up when I can. I almost have a "perfect game" on Rock of Ages, but there are 2 keys that just require so much luck in the stars aligning that I just gave up.

EDIT: speaking of achievements, I'm trying to finish the Battlemode achievements for Doom Eternal. None of my other friends have the game.

Glad to hear it! This is a nice step in the right direcion....I genuinely enjoy achievements. It reminds me of back when I was a kid on the NES and we would try to finish Zelda with just the iron sword or some other artificial limitation to make the game more challenging. For me, they add a second layer of challenging replayability to many titles. It can also be an interesting bit of insight when achievements indicate what percentage of the playerbase used X solution instead of Y.

But sadly, a year and a half later, despite all the Valve-hate and EGS-fanboy proselytizing....still a bare bones trash storefront with no shopping cart or gifting. The only thing EGS has going for it is free games from the fortnite money. I know no one pays attention to history, but this didn't work long term for Rome either. I think they will hobble along for many more years with Tencent buying higher percentages, but they will never try to actually build a community back end filled with features to serve their consumer base.

I feel like Origin's achievements are cluttered as f**k. I remember them popping up while playing Jedi Fallen Order and before I had a chance to make sense what the achievement was called, it was already off the screen.

Though to join the convo, I also do not play games to get the achievements or give 2 shiznits about earning them. If I do, it's by luck and not a clue what I did probably to have earned it. Nor do I care, lol.

I've never experienced any problems with the epic game store.

As for lack of a shopping cart - I've only worn out fourteen keyboards typing out stuff again so I think I should sue them, but that was before I found out about the wonders of cut and paste.

People have often reported having their credit card's fraud protection get tripped for too many repeat transactions during a sale.

You're kidding right?

EDIT: Holy shit you aren't - they still don't have a cart. Buying multiple games during a sale must be fun.

It's rare that I deliberately try to complete achievements, but I do sometimes enjoy statistics to see how many people/what percentage of players have completed X part of the game. Usually most games are well under 50% of player base even finishing a game, let alone doing the harder achievements. I do like seeing some of the insanely low percentage achievements completed on my game through normal play though.
I think it's interesting when easier-than-easy achievements like "finish the tutorial" or "defeat your first enemy" have like 85% completion.
