Star Wars: The Old Republic on Steam

In still more free-to-play news, the Star Wars: The Old Republic Website announces this free-to-play Star Wars MMORPG is now available on Steam. Word is: "The Steam platform provides a new way for players--Padawan and Master alike--to play, discuss, and experience The Old Republic. Now you can earn new trading cards, emoticons, and more all while playing your original characters with full cross-save and crossplay, on or off the Steam platform!" Here's a refresher on the game:
STAR WARS™: The Old Republic™ is the only massively multiplayer online game with a Free-to-Play option that puts you at the center of your own story-driven STAR WARS™ saga. Play as a Jedi, a Sith, a Bounty Hunter, or as one of many other iconic Star Wars roles and explore the galaxy far, far away over three thousand years before the classic films. With 5 narrative expansions, become the hero of your own STAR WARS adventure as you choose your path down the Light or Dark side of the Force™.

Can they please make the speeders go faster? It'a fraud to call them speeders.

That is actually pretty cool. The credit limit use to be something stupid like 250k. The game has 8 class based storylines that you can complete before you even have to worry about expansions, so that's a lot of content for no money really.

The 1st two expansions are now also included for non-subscribers... so it is more content than you think!

I've only been doing the class story (on each planet) and each planet's story... and I'm still a level or two ahead for the next planet. Oh... I've been doing one companion side quest, too.
Other than the first two planets... I haven't really done any side quest.

The quests all pretty much boil down to fight (or avoid a majority (if you can)) trash mobs deep into a "location" to reach "the mission objective NPC" (to Kill or Take Prisoner), or the mission objective OBJECT (to Gather or Destroy).

I'm about 3/4 through my first class story... and the missions are starting to get pretty stale.

The only thing that keeps me going is that I'm playing mostly Dark, and the cut-scenes are fairly hilarious.

Worth it even if only to play through the class stories. Not as robust as KotOR but still some good story telling and RPG elements which can be done entirely on your own.

Not bad for a game which has been declared dead at least a dozen times.

I started playing this about a month ago.
They upped the credit limit to 1 million, and did a few other things for non subscribers.... if you do just your class story and planet story... there is no grind other than the mission tasks themselves.

Haven’t spent a dime and so far haven’t felt pressured to spend anything.

I suppose the model is profitable for them overall but playing as a non-subscriber largely sucks in a way that I always assumed just makes people rage quit rather than decide to sub.

I played this for about a year for free last year. The stories for the main missions and side quests are pretty good. The problem is about the grinding you have to do. The credit limit is 200,000. Which means you can't really but anything useful. Can't use a bank to save your funds. Can't use a guild bank if you join one on a free account. So many limitations that can be pretty annoying. The revan boss battle cheats like hell. Probably the biggest cheating boss in the game. Unfair if you solo with companions. I would recommend people team up for the revan battle. It's very hard. Or was when I did it. This game is good for a couple of playthroughs on either side of the factions. Not worth doing subscriptions. Pretty much everything in the game is designed to rob you of real money.

An F2P from a major publisher like EA trying to rob you? Say it ain't so!
