Sennheiser Announces EPOS Line

Sennheiser announces they are launching a new division called EPOS dedicated to premium audio hardware for gaming. The first products from this are expected in October. We should probably expect to hear a lot about them between now ant then, as they outline plans for an extensive promotional campaign and esports sponsorships. Here's the first taste of that, a promotional video kicking off an image campaign. They say their products will bring you the happiness you seek: "At EPOS, we want to give the market a new perspective on how audio can enhance the gaming experience," says Maja Sand-Grimnitz, Head of Global Marketing. "As a new brand with a solid audio heritage and future, the campaign and promise ‘Out of this world gaming audio’ will resonate with gamers, who are truly looking for the best way to maximise their gaming experience. Premium audio can enhance that feeling and this message is at the heart of the campaign. We want to make EPOS the golden ticket to the best gaming experience and a happier you.” So far they only mention a line of headsets, which they promise will provide "an unparalleled balm to the brain":
EPOS, a newly formed company dedicated to the creation of high-end audio equipment for Gaming and Enterprise Solutions, proudly announces the official launch of their global gaming campaign. Built on the principles of uncompromising audio engineering, contemporary aesthetics and superb build quality, the EPOS brand in the gaming segment exists to serve gamers who demand absolute excellence from their equipment to maximise their gaming experience. Crafted to last, and designed to excite, the EPOS range of headsets will become the definitive gaming audio solution for those who share the EPOS passion for performance.

Built upon Demant’s 115 years of experience in sound and innovation and building on the legacy of Sennheiser Communications A/S, EPOS will sell the Sennheiser Communications gaming portfolio as co-branded EPOS | SENNHEISER whilst also introducing an exceptional new portfolio of premium EPOS branded products. The first major EPOS-only branded gaming product launch is set for October 2020.

Founded on the belief in “The Power of Audio” to transport gamers to another dimension, EPOS understand that gaming – and superior gaming audio - provides an unparalleled balm to the brain. EPOS products deliver powerful, visceral experiences for unsurpassed amounts of in-game immersion and flow. Transporting gamers to a different reality, EPOS audio enhances every vital sound cue, delivering total clarity of communication for a spellbinding experience. Each product is created to take technology, design and performance to unprecedented levels.

From what I can see though, they aren't open-backed headphones, which severely limits your sound stage. I hope that secretly they're open-backed, or at least come in that flavour. Closed-ear headphones are good for extended bass response, but you miss out on the 3D accuracy that a more spacious soundstage gives you. I used the Beyherdynamics 990 DT 600 ohms for a while, but they're a bit bright and heavy, I just keep coming back to my Sennheiser 598 cans, they're light, they deliver a great soundstage, and you can EQ on your sound card to get a more plump presentation. Don't go full bathtub-curve, but a bit in the 130hz and a bit in the 5k-8k makes em real nice and flat.

Did anyone else clap their hands at "IDDQD"? teeeehehehe I squeaked a bit.

Such a slick trailer, and honestly anything with Sennheisers drivers in them and proper microphone is going to be epic sauce. BTW The bigger the diaphragm on the mic the better the pick-up, they aren't putting lavaliere-quality mics in headsets anytime soon, so in general bigger = better.

Thanks for the suggestion, though they seem to be only stereo.

I do still recommend the the A40, but it is indeed just stereo.

Razer has a line of headsets that have the best 3D effect, based on reviews (they own THX), but their actual sound quality of the physical cans have a lot complaints. More so or less depending on the model.

If you have a large head the Logitech one does have some clamping force. I had no problem with it, however and I don't have an unusually small cranium or anything.

Edit - Red's stretching technique would probably fix it if it's an issue. They're durable as F-... well any of Logitech's products, really.

Drayth, thanks for the Logitech recommendation.

I'm willing to bet that when you see somebody complain about lag with USB it's due to one of five reasons. the first four are their system is shit and the fifth one being they've plugged the headphones into a USB hub that also has a Western digital backup hard drive plugged into it and a printer along with their mouse & keyboard etc etc etc

I'd be willing to bet that going with Drayths recommendation is a safe way to go. Anyone who owns a modded $1,500 pair of headphones probably knows what the heck they are talkin about.

Nothing perceivable by me. I'm pretty critical of such things too. This is the first I've heard of this on the level of it being a potential issue, and I checked a lot of reviews of virtual headsets over the years (this model especially).

This is my choice for top gaming headset.

I believe it checks all your boxes and the comfort's great. One of those "I forget they're on" types.
Thanks, I'll check them out. I have never used headphones with a USB connection before, but I've heard reports that it introduces some lag. Have you (or anyone) found that to be the case?

I'm in the market for a decent new headset (with mic, for gaming), anyone have any suggestions?

Requirements:
  • over the ear
  • surround sound
  • comfortable for longer sessions (I'm prone to headaches)
  • volume controls inline/on headset are a big plus
El Presidente aka "Blue" has used the Astro A40.

Comfort
I've owned some real head squeezers and have gone so far as to actually "open" up the headband by almost straightening it out completely. So far none have broke.
If the pads bother your ears don't hesitate to try aftermarket or mod them yourself.

i am using a logitech h800. i need on-ear to hear my surroundings (cats, wife, you know it), i need the switch (off, bluetooth instantly connecting to my phone for incoming/outgoing calls, pc via logitech dongle [not unifying]) and the general weight is great.

if i could find another brand of headsets which does that, i would change. other than that, h800 it is.

I put my Sennheiser's down for planner electromagnetic headphones. Takes more power to drive them, but rewarded with durable sound production with amazing clarity. The positional audio is excellent because of neutrality.

But I've still got a soft spot for the warm qualities in Sennheisers.

Though these are pretty out of reach for most gamers, headphone audio is my other indulgent hobby, my HD800 (superdupont mod'ed) are F'ing amazing for gaming. I've since settled on a different end game primary music listening can, but the 800's have the best soundstage in a headphone I know of.

Sennheiser sinks a lot of money in to R&D, it may produce some interesting stuff. They already have some gaming-specific hardware, not just headphones, it must be giving some returns now that they're willing to go full-in.

I have a pair of HyperX right now. They have decent sound for the price. The cool thing is that the inline controller has a standard 3.5mm jack, so I can plug in any headphones I want as a replacement. I haven't owned a pair of Sennheisers in a decade, so need to remember to keep them on the short list.

Love their headphones; I've got two pairs sitting on my desk right now. All they'd need for gamers is to clip a decent mic to the thing.

My experience with a more traditional "gaming" headset was not great. As Task mentioned, it wasn't as comfortable nor did it sound as good. Additionally I found that using a USB headset instead of analog introduced almost 50ms of extra audio latency, but maybe that's a driver issue that could be remedied.
