Op Ed

  • PC Gamer - Steam's new Point Shop makes you face the awful truth of how much money you spend on Steam. Thanks Phlegm.
"For Valve, the Points Shop seems like yet another clever way to keep people absorbed in the Steam ecosystem, a little nudge towards spending more money. But I'm not sure the designers thought about what Points do if you never spend them. They'll just keep piling up with every purchase. For me, I think the Points Shop may actually do the opposite of what Valve wants. It'll make me hesitate, just a little guilty, every time I'm about to buy a game."

It's kind of a silly article (it took me a while but I read the whole thing) but I'd rather that than yet another article about sexual harassment. Don't get me wrong, that shit needs to stop yesterday, but I'm well beyond tired of reading about it. Just fix it and be done already.

(Feeling somewhat philosophical today.) Ah, the age of faux guilt...;) If there's anything people do these days that someone doesn't try and make people feel guilty about, I don't know what it is. I'm not a Catholic, but the general thrust today is to make most people feel guiltier than a nun living in a bordello...;)--usually for no rational reason at all. People feel guilty these days because of their genetics, etc.--as if they could have changed them! Really is remarkable to hear crazy people running for political office today actually stand up and apologize for having been born!....;) I think that some folks today really enjoy it--feeling guilty about something--even about buying computer games. It's like a sort of psychological prison people put themselves in--some people I know wallow in guilt, like a Linus security blanket. Anyway, I'll pass, thank you...! Very debilitating, faux guilt.

What am I supposed to feel guilty about?

Well yeah. I don't really know how these stickers work, but I'd imagine you've got more than a 2nd grade girl in 1986 given your library, haha.

Oh I'm already well aware of how much my multi thousand game library has probably cost me. I've even checked out links that analyze such things on an account. This isn't going to change anything. I actually a bit irked that valve didn't credit me points for a longer period

However, I'm ok with a "hide points" option for people who are really bugged by them like this guy.

That's a silly article. The only thing that should make you feel ashamed is if you can't pay your bills due to your video game spending habits. As long as you're doing ok financially, who cares if you bought a few games that will add to your backlog and you were granted some points for it to use on profile fluff?

This. This right here was my thoughts exactly. I also felt that it was extremely stupid & meant only for suckers who love click bait.

Why should anyone feel ashamed at all for buying games if they are financially secure? Oh wait... so-called "game journalists" (LOL) shaming their idea of "gamers" for their "hobby"... business as usual I guess. It's because of stupid crap articles like this that have made me lose almost all the trust I once had gaming journalism.

I simply can no longer shop at a store that doesn’t have points, similar to how i won’t even boot up a pc if it lacks RGB.
