On Cyberpunk 2077 Ray Tracing

NVIDIA says the Official Trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 that was released yesterday shows off their ray tracing technology. They add that the upcoming sci-fi RPG will also utilize NVIDIA DLSS 2.0. They offer the following details on the game's ray tracing support:

Gamers can expect to experience the following ray-traced features in Cyberpunk 2077 at launch:

  • Ray-traced ambient occlusion - Ambient occlusion is a shading and rendering technique used to calculate how exposed each point in a scene is to ambient lighting. The result is a diffuse shading effect that darkens enclosed and sheltered areas and enhances the rendered image's overall tone. In Cyberpunk 2077, ray-traced ambient occlusion additionally can be used with local lights to approximate local shadowing effects where shadows are missing.
  • Ray-traced diffuse illumination - This technique is used to capture sky radiance as well as emissive lighting from various surfaces, which is difficult to achieve with traditional rendering techniques.
  • Ray-traced reflections - In Cyberpunk 2077, ray-traced reflections are used on all surfaces and can trace ranges for up to several kilometers. They are present on both opaque and transparent objects to simulate the way light reflects from glossy and metal surfaces by tracing a single bounce of reflection rays against the scene. This includes smooth natural mirrors like window glass, but also rougher surfaces like brushed metal. Unlike screen space techniques which can only reflect what’s on screen, ray-traced reflections incorporate the entire scene around the character, and can accurately represent objects outside the camera view or facing away from the camera.
  • Ray-traced shadows - Cyberpunk 2077 preview supports directional shadows from the sun and the moon. These shadows aim to be physically accurate and even account for light scattering from clouds. Shadows may be enhanced in the final release to support other types of light sources where it is needed.

No doubt. And that won't even get you a card that does RTX worth a dam.
Thinking of leaving PC gaming behind and grabbing grabbing a PS5 instead.

If they wouldn't embrace k/m or simply M with some off-hand device, I wouldn't abandon pc gaming, but I'd lean towards consoles. There is just no way I can deal with everything via game pad, that is a huge QOL issue stepback with me that makes the money not the issue, but the io device.

I’m really starting to dislike the fact that 3DPR is deeply in bed with NV when it comes to ray tracing, optimization and general features. What the heck?! NV must be spending top dollar to get their latest hardware promoted like that. I for one am planning to “support” AMD this time unless they get totally owned by NV (which I doubt, according to what’s rumored about RDNA2 performance).

Still not dropping 400+ bucks for Ray Tracing.

I see the RTX 2060 is down to $340. Not cheap, but not as bad as $400.

The problem with the 2060 and 2060 super, soon as you turn on ray tracing the performance goes into the dumps. a 2070 is a minimum for any sort of ray tracing and more likely a 2080. Going to be interesting how the 3000 series change this if at all.

I'm also on an older i7 that was beast when I got it but that was like 5 years ago... I'm certain an i9 would blow it the f**k away.

Do you live in Alaska? Because I hear the i9 makes a great space heater.

Why Alaska? You know that a third of the US is in the snowbelt right? They even get cold and snow in New Mexico for Pete sake! Have you ever been through the snowbelt in winter? This winter you must take the whole Dreyer clan on a road trip through the northern US. Say Mont/No Dak/Minn/Wisc. In the words of School House Rock,

If I'm going to purchase a RTX Card I'm going to spend the money to get a 1080ti equivalent, which is comparable to a 2070 RTX Super.. The offering posted in the cheapest out there and THEREFORE entry level for RTX.
My statement is true.

We are PC Gamers, no offense to MSI but I don't buy entry level hardware. It's like people who buy stuff at the dollar store and don't understand why it doesn't work as good or survive as long.

MSI does have entry level hardware, but don't let that you fool you. They also have some of the highest out of box clock rates of any card manufacturer in the US. I say in the US because I think Palit graphic cards have the overall fastest speeds but you can't buy them in the US? Weird stuff.

I wouldn't either, good thing no ones sells a RTX only capable card.

Glad I'm not the only one that couldn't care less about Ray Tracing.

If nVidia offered a GTX 1680 TI for a couple hundred less than the RTX 2080 TI... or... for next gen, a GTX 1780(?) TI for a couple hundred less than RTX 3080 TI... I'd go with a GTX every time. That's how much I don't care about fricken Ray Tracing.

Uugggh. This has been my favorite build of all time for sure regarding balance. All I've upgraded since I got it was my graphics card from a 970 to 1070. That has given it a second wind. I'm sure I could handle this game with it but obviously not at all effects (Ray Tracing). I'm also not sure how much Ray Tracing should be considered to upgrade because I've seen so many on/off videos and the on effects are hardly noticeable. I'm sure in action it looks amazing, but if you never had it, I'm not sure it's enough to care...
I agree. I have a 1080ti. Ray tracing isn't enough of a wow factor to consider upgrading.
