Star Wars: Squadrons Trailer; First Details

The Star Wars: Squadrons Trailer Premiere Trailer is now online, offering the promised look at EA Motive's upcoming starfighter combat game. This includes no gameplay, it is a cinematic trailer showing off the game's use of the Frostbite engine, but Geoff Keighley supplied more details, including the fact that there will be a gameplay reveal on Thursday during EA Play. Word is the game will be centered on five-versus-five multiplayer combat with the objective of destroying the opposing team's flagship, so this sounds like a space MOBA. It is set after Return of the Jedi and will also include a single-player component as well as VR support. The release is planned for October 2nd for Windows and consoles, with the PC versions available through Origin, Steam, and the Epic Games Store with support for cross-platform play. It will cost USD $39.99 and will include the ability to earn cosmetic items in-game.

Looks decent. Can't wait to see the gameplay. I just hope it has enough of a campaign to have replayability, rather than relying entirely on multiplayer.
Yeah, I actually skipped the original XvT for this reason: not enough SP to justify purchase.
Ditto. I was a massive fan of the original Tie Fighter but wasn't interested in X Wing vs Tie Fighter. It just seemed a weird direction to take the franchise, especially back then. That's my concern with this game, especially with the lower than AAA price.

I'm calling that's exactly what they're going to do:

An X-wing vs Tie Fighter remake, with additional SP DLC campaigns modelled after if not completely copied from the original series.

First person, systems management and importance of briefings were already mentioned on their site.

Most ships have already been modelled. Story exposition can be done mostly in briefings , without mocap work. A lot of instructions can be done with modern ui and in-game voice.

Everyone has an analogue controller nowadays where analogue joysticks were a high price of entry for a single game in the nineties. Mouse control was iffy at best, even in shooters.

That's how X-Wing was lumped with niche flightsims, not because of any inherent complexity the game had over FPS's. Later Ace Combat proved it's mass appeal, and the X Wing series could have a lot less production value since the framework of the conflicts are already established.

Okay, good call. Hard to argue. Although I like 1bad's answer too.

It's funny you mention the ARC-170. I was cruising around the internet yesterday and came upon the P-61, an aircraft I'd never heard of before. Check out that profile. There seems little doubt that this was the inspiration for the ARC-170.

No. Because it's 5v5 PVP in a MOBA. All the things I hate in video games.

Yes, when you buy an EA game from a platform other than Origin, the game will launch from the Origin client.

Have always been a big fan of space cockpit games. Been playing since my Apple II/Commodore 64 days. Loved Tie Fighter and X-wing games from Lucasarts. The one thing I have been waiting on but no developer seems to get right with space games is sense of speed. Many get speed right with small ship vs. small ship dogfighting, but I still haven't played one yet that really gives the impression of speed when you get near larger objects like capital ships, asteroids, space stations, etc. No one seems to get it right. Most end up feeling like my ship is a slug next to these large vessels. I know the technology was not up to this in the past, but even today no one seems to get it right. In the game Independence War 2, the small ships would pass at lightning speed, but that would be too fast for big ships (it might be realistic for the true speeds we'd be going in space), but it doesn't give a real controllable feel for what I want to see. It should feel like the scenes in Star Wars where the x--wings are racing over the Death Star. It should take time to pass a big capital ship, but the textures/ship surface should be flying past me. Also, it should be designed so I can easily tell that I am close to the surface of the capital ship. In the old days you'd often bump into the capital ship because it was difficult to tell how close you were due to surface texture limitations. Now it should be easy. I haven't played all the new games, and if I missed one that fits the bill, please reply back. Just saying and wishing.

How they still get away with posting this as gameplay footage. You’re showing the scripted scenes! There was not one view of the in game HUD. How?!?!!

Bruh, where does it say it's gameplay? In fact, from the blurb: "the fact that there will be a gameplay reveal on Thursday during EA Play."

Yep you’re right. I read “Game Engine Footage” very wrongly lol. I don’t know I’m just tired of these cinematic reveals that don’t shed any gameplay, just the ooohs and aaaahs of graphics.

Yeah, I'm usually the one complaining "not gameplay!"

Still, I appreciate that EA usually does in-engine cinematic trailers instead of pre-rendered so I can get an idea of what the graphics will be like.

Single Player campaign is mentioned, though no idea if it's a 4 hour deal or what.

That is exactly what I want to know, the game mentions Coop. But what kind of Coop. I'm really hoping its Campaign Coop.

Nice to see this going directly to Steam without any linked Origin to it.

Expectations are high, but lets see if it stays that way.

Interesting that they're going on Steam right out of the gate instead of forcing people onto Origin.
I think they are less afraid of steam now. They have built their niche marketshare with Origin, and their special monthly access packages. Anyone who wanted to buy things through origin is already doing it. Their recent moves with putting a bunch of games on steam, and now this, shows that they are getting smart. They want everyone on all platforms buying it. There's a bunch of pent up demand from steam only gamers that they want to tap into.
Yeah, I expected it on Steam eventually, just not out of the gate. I guess they did the same thing for Jedi Fallen Order though.
