Dwarf Fortress Steam Version First Look

This video offers a look at the upcoming Steam release of Dwarf Fortress, the cult-favorite settlement management game (thanks PCGamesN). This includes developer commentary and a look at the addition of actual graphics that will replace the ASCII artwork of the original. Word is: "The deepest, most intricate simulation of a world that's ever been created. The legendary Dwarf Fortress is now on Steam. Build a fortress and try to help your dwarves survive, OR adventure as a single hero against a deeply generated world. As seen on the 2020 Guerrilla Collective Showcase."

I've never played Rimworld or Dwarf Fortress, but everything I have seen and read about them makes me think Oxygen Not Included is a better choice.
Both Rimworld and Oxygen Not Included are excellent games that I think you would enjoy based on your playlist.
I'm playing ONI. Even though I am a Minecraft guy, ie.. graphics aren't that important, the Rimworld graphics really put a kink in my liking the game. But more importantly, it appears to be a little heavy on the survival aspects for my tastes.

I had a tough time with Dwarf Fortress UI when I tried it a few years back. RimWorld is awesome and gets constant updates too. Glad they are addressing this with DF finally.

Once you play oddRealm (or the more well known Rimworld) you realize very quickly that DF needs more than a visual upgrade. It needs a well thought out GUI

I'm following this. When I first tried to get into Dwarf Fortress, I had less of a problem with the ascii graphics than the inscrutable menu commands. I thought the game desperately needed context-sensitive menus that were better organized.

That's my main issue with the game as well, and I hope they make some improvements in that area for the Steam release, although nothing has been shown yet. He did say in the video that they're looking to 'improve the usability of the game' as well so that's a good sign. If it's just a graphics upgrade then I'll probably just skip it and stick with the current version.

I've enjoyed RimWorld. It simplifies aspects of the game world (compared to DF) that makes it easier to play, but I wish the pace was faster. I play on the second-toughest level. I would tune the game to give raids more often, but be easier. I'd also provide more recruitment opportunities to speed the power curve and move faster to the end game.

Wherein DF updates the graphics from 1978 to 1988.
