Modern Day Battlefield 6 Rumor

ResetEra highlights a recent tweet from Tom Henderson saying the next Battlefield game will be set in the modern day. They call him a reliable source for advance info on the military shooter series in the past. Bearing that out is a follow-up tweet from Jeff Grubb where the Venturebeat writer endorses this information with a simple, but concise "Yup."

2142 was my first forray into competitive FPS gaming, my clan competed in TWL, TGL, and CAL leagues in 5v5 and 8v8 infantry only. It was the best time I've had gaming in my life, I can't wait to see 2143 make a return, and what they'll be able to do with the next gen consoles as a starting point... it's going to be amazing when it finally comes.

And yes, they've been teasing it for a decade.

1) Easter eggs of PAC gunship 2142 units in Battlefield 3
2) Last DLC pack of BF4 had a docked titan, pod launchers, the Roarsch gauss rifle, and docked EU Mechs
3) Tropical island DLC pack for BF4 had a "titan mode" where you literally captured silos just like 2142, and they fired missiles at the enemy's battleship, which you could then board after it took enough damage and try to destry it from within. Almost carbon copy of 2142's titan mode.
4) Capital Supremacy in Star Wars Battlefront 2 is another near-clone on 2142's titan mode. 5 conquest capture points on the ground phase, whoever won that phase boarded the enemy capital ship and has to destroy the core.

It's no secret what they're going for, and i think why it's taken so long is they really want to do it right. Starting with a modern Battlefield to kick off the next gen and iron out all the kinks of a new engine revision and new platform makes sense, hopefully 2143 will be the next one afterwards.
Given the love and nostalgia for 2142, it's kind of shocking they haven't come out with a sequel yet.

I played BF2142 during the BETA and the released game was a disappointment, as many good features were changed or removed. This was done during the EA buyout when DICE went from a groundbreaking studio to a rinse-and-repeat division of EA churning out ever more simplified and dumbed-down sequels. Bad Company 2 was the last BF game that truly deserved the franchise name. BF3 started the "style over substance" downward trend that brought us to the abominable BF5.

Will BF6 be BF2143? I would like to see it, but the things that make BattleField like LAN & Mod support, admin tools, the commander, comprehensive class system, squad system, sandbox (not corridor) maps, total access to ALL vehicles (nothing on rails) has been taken from the series in an attempt by EA to "mainstream" the game in direct competition to Call of Duty.

Single player? In a multi-player-only game? yuck. Make a game with the features (above) and release the whole damn thing map-complete, then you ship single player in single-player mission-pack DLC if you REALLY want to waste development resources.

At this point a "BF1942 remastered" would be the best possible outcome, as that game had a superior mechanic to almost all it's sequels. We could play "sub vs carrier" again. Remember being able to use a submarine? Or moving the carrier so the enemy didn't know where to attack? Circling market garden in a B52 with your squad-mate on gun as a spawn-point for your team? Wake Island? There's a reason that this map keeps coming back. They had good map design in the game.

The Desert Combat Mod for BF1942 is what spawned BF2 and probably was what created the franchise. Nothing (not even BF2) has come close to as good a GAME (forget visuals for a minute) than the Desert Combat mod of BF1942. Maybe DICE can have their team play that for a few weeks for inspiration.

BF2143 would certainly be interesting. Mechs in that engine would certainly be something.

Please oh please be BF2143. Bigger scope, better weapons and accessories.. and make it everything like BF4 and nothing like those two games that followed. 64 vs 64? giant bases, Titan mode... oh god, we need this.

Another vote for 2143. Nearly a decade after they first started teasing it I'm getting a bit pissed it's still nowhere to be seen. That said, after Hardline/1/V I'm skeptical they can make a good game again, so maybe it's best they prove themselves with a modern iteration before making the game I really want.

Truth be told, though, I think their design philosophy has strayed too far from BF3/4 and the Battlefield I love is dead.

I have been wanting a proper 2142 sequel for years but its obvious that DICE or whats left of DICE want nothing to do future settings.

until they can get a grip on the cheaters im out

2143 or Vietnam 2 would make it harder on me

if they went back to BF2 era with a good commander mode, and brought back maps like Karkland and Sharqi it would be tough!

i been playing Warzone since they announced massive targeting of cheaters, and like Plunder, but regular CoD multi is never gonna win me over.

A proper sequel from BC1/2 and BF3/4 would be awesome. Bring back destruction and all the modern vehicles and weapons on the newest Frostbite engine on next-gen consoles and PC for fall 2021.

More Battlefield 2142 Titan Mode please!

I still think BF4 was perfect. They got the awesome BF3 soldier combat and really tightened up the vehicles to make a great game. Now do that and make Battlefield 2143! *please please please*

I don't have much confidence left in DICE after 1 and V. Honestly, I can't think of any significant ways to improve on 4 right now.

I will say though I had zero confidence in the Call of Duty franchise, but I really like the soft reboot of Modern Warfare. So maybe DICE can do something similar.

As much as I enjoy Battlefield V, I couldn't stand Battlefield 1 and I really don't like pre-modern equipment. I would love a new modern-day or slightly futuristic Battlefield game.

Yep, it could be fairly barebones too, as far as I am concerned. Straight deathmatch with progressing difficulty for example, keep it simple.

Now if they can fix up that netcode & stop breaking up content into way, late DLC ... with no lootboxes.

I might actually start buying & playing it at that point ....

You'd think after 20 years - they could get a handle on improving what's needed and leaving alone what the community asks for...?
