Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning Re-Vealed

A new listing on the Microsoft Store reveals plans for Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, a remaster of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the 2012 RPG from Big Huge Games and 38 Studios that was designed by Ken Rolston, R.A. Salvatore, and Todd McFarlane (thanks PC Gamer). The listing says our day of re-reckoning is August 18th of this year. Target systems are not mentioned and the system requirements online mention Xbox One, so we reckon it remains to be seen if this is coming to PC as well. I vaguely remember playing this in 2014, back when you could grab the 'Complete Pack' on Steam for $12. It may have been unmemorable, but at least that means I didn't hate it.

... so who has the rights to this? Are they maybe thinking about getting to produce the sequels that were going to be so huge had 38 not folded?

The only problem with the game is that is wasn't balanced very well and it was too easy. I hope they work on that, the gfx were very fine.

If you read the list, it is just repeating what the game today already has that you could have got for free or very very cheap. They added some gfx fidelity? I hope that isn't all, wouldn't be worth anything more if that is all they did.

I've tried to finish this game about three times. The problem is I got all the add on content and did stuff out of order, so when I went back to the main game, I was overleveled and things got really boring.

Got this confused with Alganon at first. That MMO DS bought then just let run with no updates.

The game was OK, but as was hinted at already, they were expecting it to be the first of a huge new IP. That's why they had R.A. Salvatore pen the lore behind it and Todd McFarlane design the art for it. They dumped all this hype and money into an... OK product.

I agree to the overpowering/balance. I was constantly selling 'junk' because I had no space in inventory.

They should not only improve the graphic quality, but also do a re-balance, as well as add co-op for up to 4 players (because there's no MMORPG so let's just get half-way there). Oh, and PC support for all of this would be nice.

and I guess co-op would also mean a re-balance to the re-balance. It never ends...

This game was actually really good, it was a hidden gem imo.
The combat was especially fluid and very fun. If they could combine the combat of this game and everything else from Skyrim, it would for sure be one of the best games ever made.

The trouble was that there was no real balancing done at all. You were completely overpowered in 5 hours and there was no semblance of challenge afterward. I enjoyed it as a fun little SP with MMO style quests, it reminds me a bit of a Western Xenoblade.

OUCH!
Who threw that rock?!

Why? I think it was pretty well received overall. I still have it in my Steam lieberry and play time shows...63 hours! Steam reviews shows as "very positive". I don't recall much about it now but I remember I actually quite liked the world design. If this comes to XGP I'll give it a go, but I won't re-buy.

Edit: Looks like what I posted I got only half right, Corefracture has the better info (number 4, below) as he worked there...

I don't think Kingdoms bombed, really. It was an enjoyable game that I remember, and an amazing game from the perspective that it was an indie's first title. At the outset, the future was very bright for Big Huge Games/38 Studios.

I think the issue was, it was more that Curt Schilling had a bigger plan than just this game. This was just the beginning. The first game was supposed to be a taste of what was to come. 38 Studios were also attempting to create an MMORPG in the same setting as Kingdoms, and it was going to compete with the likes of World of Warcraft. In addition, he had whole mess of other products in the pipeline like merchandising, novels etc...

Unfortunately, whomever okayed that loan (we know it wasn't the tax payers...) was an idiot, because (1) the amount they asked for wasn't enough to end up making a triple AAA MMORPG like WoW and (2) whomever okayed that loan was ultimately gambling with taxpayers f'ing money...

PS: Yes, I liked the game. Also, guess where I'm from?

Yeah, this game was mostly well received, but kind of got lost in the cloud of everyone realizing Curt Schilling was a comic book villain without the money.
