Get Arx Fatalis Free for Arkane's 20th Anniversary

This tweet from Bethesda celebrates the 20th anniversary of Arkane Studios (thanks Thinus). Instead of collecting birthday presents, however, the French developer is handing them out. The video in the tweet concludes with word that for a limited time you can Arx Fatalis free to keep if you sign up for their newsletter. You can do this and pick up your copy of their first game on this 20th Anniversary Website. There is also a series of articles there looking back at the studio's history, a digital art book, some wallpapers, and the promise of more in the coming weeks. Here's a refresher on Arx Fatalis from its official description:
This critically acclaimed first-person RPG takes the player on an amazing journey into the fantasy world of Arx. The game mixes intelligent story with immersive and actual medieval surroundings. Arx Fatalis allows the player to feel that all his actions have a direct consequence on those around him.

Unknown reasons? System Shock 2 had endless respawning enemies and breaking weapons combined with a lot of backtracking in mazelike levels which meant you ended up fighting with a stupid wrench through the same maps over and over again! Which just wasn't fun. Also everybody you ever thought you would meet was always dead when you got there. Which got old fast. And it seems they repeated the same exact mistakes with Prey again, regardless of choosing a bad name, just because it was available.

I've honestly never understood this gripe. I'm a Thief player, so maybe that factors into it, but I like that there are respawning monsters, and I like that the levels are alive and never empty, regardless of firefights. In Thief, I don't take out any AI (unless it's utterly necessary), I avoid them like you're meant to. This keeps Thief alive, too. Knocking everyone out leaves you with a non-shooter-run-and-not-gun, boring, empty, no challenge. Additionally, I have never once run out of needed tools in SS2. In fact, my elevator remains utterly crammed with equipment from the moment I first restore it to functionality.

I just finished Prey a few weeks ago. There are quite a few survivors.

I think there are NPC survivors in Prey.

I kind of agree with the sentiment, though. After two games of everyone being slaughtered and SHODAN being the villainous mastermind, repeating the formula is going to seem silly. Soon she's going to be threatening the world with a weather machine while cackling in evil glee. And of course everyone on the Martian base or the stellar research station or whatever is going to be dead dead dead. They probably need to sideline her for a game or two and do some world building instead.

Both the respawning enemies and breaking weapons could configured or turned off altogether in the game's config files.

In a late patch, after the initial damage had been done and many players were disappointed already!

Also,
Also everybody you ever thought you would meet was always dead when you got there.
is the whole point of the game. You are the last survivor. Same as System Shock 1.

Same as with System Shock 1, exactly. Maybe this was a cool idea when experienced for the first time, but if it is repeated again and again it just gets boring! First SS1, then SS2, then Bioshock after Bioshock and lastly Prey...

Tried to play Arx around 2014 and kept getting a crash in the human level. Couldn't get a work around on it..

Just saw steam had a patch on the 20th of may.. wonder if it's been fixed.

Thief too complicated? Nah. Those games came out when there were many, many more "complicated" (complex) games around. Thief was very simple by comparison.

If Thief really sold poorly (the first game sold 500K copies by May 2000 according to Wikipedia and IIRC that was a decent success at that time) then it was probably more due to the fact that it had no action and that it seemed to be too boring for many FPS gamers. Stealth isn't for everyone. There was also strong competition around that time in the so called golden era of PC gaming.

The second game might have suffered from its weird shift towards mysticism with the undead zombie garbage and the industrial "metal age" stuff. I was a huge fan of Thief but did not particularly like the direction of the second game. They should have kept it more grounded in reality (straight medieval setting) in my opinion.

ARX was flawed but extremely cool for it's time.

Arkane has done really interesting games over the past 20 yrs..... & I hope they can continue at least another 20.

Arkane is amazing! But just like those other studios that released really great games, their games are just not selling well. Sometimes it is the title and the public social fuss about it (Arkane's "Prey"), sometimes the game is "too complicated" (Looking Glass' first two "Thief" games), sometimes for to me unknown reasons (Irrational Games' "System Shock 2").

If only gamers put their money where their mouth is, those game studios would make or would have made enough money to give us a lot more great games. But I guess most people don't REALLY want those, if they were honest. Some "Shoot 'em in the face"-multiplayer games with cartoon characters making more money than games by Arkane, Looking Glass, Irrational Games? Okay. I rest my case.

Resistance is definitely something I don't think we'll get past, unless we figure out some kind of 'smart clothing', like the impact vests and such, but on a much more elaborate scale... but I've been seeing more of the home-made solenoid-style additions to controllers being printed and designed. We're not going to get 'I swing, hit, and am unable to swing past due to resistance', but we can get to 'I swing, hit, and felt the hit.'

Unfortunately, most of those kinds of mods for controllers tend to make things a bit heavier, so people might come up with all sorts of new ways to get further immersion.

Magic and archery tend to work really well in VR, melee weapons less so. The lack of resistance is probably an insurmountable problem. There are hand-to-hand VR games that a lot of people find fun (Gorn, Blood and Sorcery), but it's just not going to be as naturally immersive, which is I assume why Alyx didn't get a crowbar.

I could do with an Arx Fatalis VR Remake. Combat was slow enough for it, and still somewhat enjoyable, even if you did bob back and forth to get those hits in. The magic system would work perfect in VR as well.

I would be impressed if the game didn't have game breaking bugs. So no thanks for a broken ass game. How about fixing game breaking bugs.
