If you liked SS2 for it's world and story and open gameplay style then you would really like SS1 too. If I recall SS2 kind of narrowed down some of the mechanics in comparison to SS1.

Eh? I think SS2 had a ton of mechanics added on. Stats, skills, inventory Tetris, psychic powers, weapons degradation, credits, research, character creation. SS1 had cyberspace and rather more cyberware to play with. I liked SS1 a lot better, but not because it had more mechanics going on.
I'm kind of sad they pulled back on the remake's scope. I played through the previous version of the demo (I think backers only?); it was nostalgic, but I don't see playing through the full game more than once. What they wanted to expand into was more like what happened with the Resident Evil 2 Remake, and I thought that was great. Probably similar to the Final Fantasy 7 remake, too. Oh well.
