Minecraft Dungeons Warning

A tweet from Windows 98 Tech Support warns that uninstalling Minecraft Dungeons might wipe your entire SSD if you are using the version of the game with the launcher. Tom's Hardware reports that Mojang has addressed this problem, so you should just make sure that your launcher is updated to Bootstrap 166 to be safe going forward. They provide this explanation from Mojang's Marcio Oliveira:
“Before uninstalling anything, please ensure the Minecraft Dungeons Launcher at least uses Bootstrap version 166 or higher. You can check this at Settings > About > Bootstrap,” the report reads.

Oliveria’s comment, meanwhile, goes into detail about the bug’s origin.

“When a player selected a custom ‘Install Location’ in the Dungeons installation dialog, the Dungeons Launcher was taking that location and naively considering that only files written by the Dungeons Launcher would live there,” Oliveria wrote. “Thus, when uninstalling the Launcher, the uninstall logic would simply delete that ‘Install Location’ folder, to leave no traces of program files created by the Launcher on disk.”

Keep in mind, to reproduce this you'd have to install this thing somewhere stupid... the more stupid the location the more disastrous the results.
But yeah, rookie mistake anyway on the part of the devs. It's convenient to just delete the containing folder, but do it right and only delete the files that should be deleted. Or better yet, use an already existing install/uninstall product instead of writing your own.

Also what does this have to do with SSD's? It affects all drives where you install it on...

Dude, it's 2020. Who's still using disks?

Nooo, it was the developer that completely fucked up the coding of it, and the tester that totally failed to catch it.

Mojang Studios, ladies and gentlemen! I hope notch is giggling in his mansion doing the backstroke through his Olympic-sized pool of money. Good to see that Microsoft wasted no time sending over engineers from the Windows 10 update team to "lend a hand".

I have a vague memory of uninstalling Sierra Utilities (which installed with Half-Life 1 CD) deleting all contents from Program Files. Aah, fun times... Huh
