Sums it well
Wow! I never bought / played Daikatana because of all the bugs touted in the various game forums... but to actually see it in that video, and in 2020 (meaning it never was fixed)... yeah, that's as bad as everyone was saying.

Of course that video was without mods... so I don't know if any mods actually fixed the game... much like Wesp still plugging away at Vampire Bloodlines (which is awesome).
It appears there is a daikatana Wesp, sort of (or at least someone that has made the game more playable.) Like turning off the AI idiot companions and/or making them invincible for starters. Yep, he's modded that and much much more.

Note: I have not installed 1.3 nor did I know about it until 15 minutes ago.

Meh, I finished Daikatana and it was certainly better in every way than Doom 1 and 2. What it was not, was revolutionary, adn what it definitely was was janky AF, the intro probably put 99% of people off instantly, and only reason it didn't put me off was that I had a detailed walkthrough ;p

That said, I played it after Quake 3, Half-Life and Unreal, so obviously it was a huge step back in that regard, but it also had some great ideas.

I finished it. The only serious complaint I had was the waypointing for your companion was broken and I ended up just telling them to wait at the beginning of the level. I don't know if that was fixed in a patch but if they'd gotten that working when it shipped it certainly would have been different from anything then currently on the shelves.

I don't recall playing this game past the first level. Making the player fight cyber-toads as an intro to the game was such a horrible decision. Too bad, because apparently some of the later levels in the game are somewhat interesting, but at this point I have better things to do than slog through Daikatana to see what I may or may not have been missing.

Ugh. The frogs. And the unplayable multiplayer netcode. Never finished it.

The article tries to blame Diakatana for the "twitch FPS" demise. (Until the latest resurgence of the last couple of Doom games).

I'd say, story based FPSs are what really killed it. Unreal, Half-Life, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Thief, are amongst the early FPS's that went beyond run'n'gun, and took things to the next level.

Serious Sam came out in early 2000 trying to resuscitate the "run'n'gun FPS", and for some it did so nicely... for me... I was bored to tears after a few levels.

So, IMO... it wasn't Diakatana's failure that flattened that genre... it was the more involved / more interesting FPS's that didn't rely on "waves of enemies" to keep your attention. Basically the FPS evolved into more story based... whether it kept some run'n'gun aspects like Half-Life... or was more RPG-like that let you built stats like Deus Ex.
