Maneater Swims Out

Oh-oh here she comes, watch out boy she'll chew you up! That's right, Maneater is now available for Windows and consoles, with the PC edition of this action/RPG (or as Tripwire Interactive quips, SharkPG) exclusively offered through the Epic Games Store. Here's a Launch Trailer and here's more on this chance to become an apex predator:
Maneater is a single player, open-world action-RPG (ShARkPG) where YOU are the shark. Starting as a small bull shark pup you are tasked with surviving the harsh world while eating your way up the ecosystem. To do this, you will explore a large and varied open world encountering diverse enemies -- both human and wildlife. Find the right resources and you can grow and evolve far beyond what nature intended, allowing the player to tailor the shark to their play style. This is fortunate, because to get revenge on the cruel fisherman that dismembered you will take evolving into a massive shark, an apex predator of legends. Eat. Explore. Evolve.

“Since we first revealed Maneater at E3 2018, we have been blown away by the overwhelmingly positive interest and support from our fans,” said John Gibson, CEO and Co-owner of Tripwire Interactive. “We’re beyond excited that today, players will finally be able to sink their teeth into the very first open-world, action-RPG where you play as a shark!”

Key Features Include:

  • Eat: Feed on humans, consume nutrients, and find rare shark loot to evolve past what nature intended.
  • Explore the Gulf: Explore seven large regions, including bayous of the gulf coast, resort beaches, industrial docks, the open ocean and more. Experience a living world with a full day/night cycle.
  • Evolve Into a Legend: Unlock and equip various Evolutions that improve and enhance your shark as you progress through the campaign.
  • Unique Story: Play through a full narrative, story-based campaign narrated by Chris Parnell (Rick and Morty, Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock) and set against the backdrop of a reality TV show.
  • Diverse, Compelling Combat: Battle fierce wildlife including other apex predators or fight against various types of human hunters ranging from town drunks all the way up to the Coast Guard.

With a truly unique premise and never-before-seen approach to the action-RPG genre, Tripwire Interactive looks forward to taking players on a journey through uncharted waters with Maneater.

You must be doing it wrong.
It's about the billion dollar company and not about the game.

No wonder I didn't get my Steam notification of it being available today despite being on my Wishlist for months if not a year. That sucks. If anything EGS has become such an annoyance more than anything else.

Rather than buy exclusively, how about just offer it at a cheaper price at launch or something? Let people have OPTIONS! I hate being forced and will not abide by it.

According to Tim, you just don't get it! /s

Well, the reviews aren't very good... Seems they should have priced it at $15 or so along with the Goat and Goose games, not $40, with how little content there is.

I agree that $40 is a bit too much, but I read a bunch of reviews and I would say the consensus is "good, but repetitive after a while".

Yeah, but when the whole thing is 10 hours long, there's not much room for "a while" before its just over. Their main quests are those MMO side quests that pop up automatically when you enter a new area, so it's not that there's some grind, it's all grind. Then you have the collectibles on top of that... It's stuff I wouldn't mind tacked on to a 50- or 100- hour game, but there's no meat here. It's a novelty game charging AA money, so a hard pass for me. I'll wait for $14.99 on an Epic coupon sale.

I'm guessing you don't feel the same way when Steam is the only available choice for playing a game?

That's not really an accurate analogy. If a game is only on Steam it isn't because a bribe was paid to keep it off of other platforms.

The poster was talking about choices, and that's what I'm referring to. I don't like a lack of choices period whether it's due to exclusivity or not, but that isn't a barrier to purchase by itself.
