Get Civilization VI for Free

Sid Meier's Civilization VI is now available for free on the Epic Games Store, confirming the rumor that the "just one more turn" strategy sequel would be the store's next giveaway. This will be yours to keep provided you snag your copy before next Thursday when it will be replaced by their next freebie. As for that, they continue to play coy with us, as they once again list "mystery game" where they would normally tip off next week's free release. But if the Reddit post that correctly predicted the Civ6 release is correct, it will be Borderlands: The Handsome Collection followed a week later by Ark: Survival Evolved (thanks PCGamesN). Here's word on this week's release:
Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI
Civilization VI offers new ways to interact with your world, expand your empire across the map, advance your culture, and compete against history’s greatest leaders to build a civilization that will stand the test of time.

EXPANSIVE EMPIRES
See the marvels of your empire spread across the map like never before. Each city spans multiple tiles so you can custom build your cities to take full advantage of the local terrain.

ACTIVE RESEARCH
Unlock boosts that speed your civilization’s progress through history. To advance more quickly, use your units to actively explore, develop your environment, and discover new cultures.

DYNAMIC DIPLOMACY
Interactions with other civilizations change over the course of the game, from primitive first interactions where conflict is a fact of life, to late game alliances and negotiations.

COMBINED ARMS
Expanding on the “one unit per tile” design, support units can now be embedded with other units, like anti-tank support with infantry, or a warrior with settlers. Similar units can also be combined to form powerful “Corps” units.

ENHANCED MULTIPLAYER
In addition to traditional multiplayer modes, cooperate and compete with your friends in a wide variety of situations all designed to be easily completed in a single session.

A CIV FOR ALL PLAYERS
Civilization VI provides veteran players new ways to build and tune their civilization for the greatest chance of success. New tutorial systems introduce new players to the underlying concepts so they can easily get started.

The thing about the Civ games since Civ 4 is that every expansion has really changed and improved the gameplay. For these games it has been the case (for many I've talked to, including myself) that the previous iteration with all expansions is better than the current with no expansions, but the current with all expansions is better than the previous with all expansions.

And the expansions for each game are properly classified as Expansions and not DLC. While the core mechanics stay mostly the same, each expansion also introduces a lot of new stuff (not just new civs) that change how the game is approached.

Very true. They have both DLC and expansions. The DLC is generally a new faction and a couple faction based units/scenarios. The expansions include major game changing things (religion, etc)

Civ4 was the best. The lead designer for Civ4, Soren Johnson, has a new Civ style game coming out called the Old World.

Early access for it is already available apparently, but be warned it appears to be Epic store only so expect to attract the haters just by virtue of mentioning it.

CiV4 is still the benchmark for me. 5 was lukewarm, 6 isnt too bad but you need rise and fall as a minimum.

Wut?

Seriously, where you been for the last 25 years?
Let's say it's not the type of game I'm attracted to but I will sure have a look with this free one and find out what I've missed all those years.

I played the original Civ quite a bit but never got really hooked. This is why I passed on the other Civ games and clones, but I might give this free game a chance. This is how freebies work: they try to get you hooked so that you buy DLCs or the next or previous game if you like what you're playing. And I think there is nothing wrong with this little enticement.

Civ looks daunting but it's quite easy once you get into it. It's my most played game ever - counting the iterations. From Civ 1 to this, I literally have several thousand hours sunk into it. Civ 5 alone is currently 887 hours on Steam atm. If there was ever a game that I got my money's worth from, it's Civ.
I'm in a similar boat. Steam shows I've played Civ 5 for over 500hrs and Civ 6 for over 100hrs. The only other similar game that comes close is Cities Skylines, which I've put over 85hrs into.

Civ 6 does a great job of introducing you to all the gameplay mechanics through helpful prompts, which can be adjusted based upon your skill level and knowledge of the franchise. Given that it's free it's certainly worth checking out. I've been a huge fan since Civ 3 and have enjoyed every release.

The nice thing about the Civ series is it introduces complexity gradually and most of it can be ignored on easier difficulties anyway. Unlike a Paradox game, for example.
