Out of the Blue

My efforts at fighting pandemic-induced inactivity got a welcome boost when someone in our community offered up a free giveaway of a home elliptical machine in a Facebook post. I laid claim to this, and after being told it was light enough to carry, walked over to collect it. The giveaway must have been because it could no longer provide exertion for someone who thought a 50 lb machine was something I could carry home for a quarter-mile. So I went back in my car to pick it up. I dutifully cleaned it off with disinfectant, and it now sits near my desk in the BlueCave where it has already provided more exercise than I've had in quite some time.

What lovely footage of an animal pacing backwards and forwards in a tiny pen where it's clearly lost it's mind.

Now excuse me while I go punch a wall out and pretend it's the face 1930s humanity.

MrsBlue asked why they were giving it away and I said sometimes you get to the point when you realize you are just using it as a clothes rack.

Yeah, but now they have to go out and buy themselves a new clothes rack.

Hmm, that would seem to raise serious questions about the importance of fitness in the sport...

Well, you have to be in top shape, since you don't actually ride the mountain bike during the race, you carry it, as these racers demonstrate.

Can't I just carry a Baby Yoda instead?

I have nothing to add to this except that my step-daughter was recently given a lifesize "stage ready" baby yoda doll (whatever they are calling it) and I can't decide if it's creepy or cute in person. I guess like all real kids it's a bit of both. I wouldn't want to carry one around.

We used to have an elliptical. Younger me thought it would be a cost savings compared to a gym membership - and maybe it was, for a while. But then the machine broke down and it was going to cost $600+ to fix. Meanwhile, Planet Fitness opened up nearby with a very competitive membership fee.

The elliptical lasted 4 or 5 years, so we did get our money out of it, but the gym provides better variety and the membership card doesn't take up half the floor space in my bedroom.

It's been the opposite experience for me. The cost of a good gym membership here is pretty nuts and equipment purchases have been easily amortized within 2 years. I also prefer working out with the missus and both of us hate working out near strangers, half of whom never wipe down the machines or clean up their weights. DIY is certainly not for everyone but I've been able to fix most of our equipment fairly easily thanks to ebay being a clearinghouse for parts.

it’s downhill, gravity may have been involved
But since we are no longer a nation of science... who knows
As for fitness, you’re more than welcome to attempt it. An ambulance and/or medivac will be waiting for you.
So, you are just insulting me for fun? Because I know you don't think I am ignorant of gravity. Great bike handling skill was required for that effort, as was some degree of fitness. But a far lesser degree of fitness than would be required for a course which wasn't entirely downhill. Maybe they should make it an alternative event...

It's weird how reading about extinct animals that might actually not be extinct brings a little hope to my morning. I mean, if we find them again it just means we get another chance at killing them off. Maybe they are cute enough that we'll care this time, who knows.

We love ours, low impact and if it starts to bug my shoulder I just ease off the handlebars and stick to the pedals. When you start to feel like you're not getting much out of it in a few months due to path of least resistance just start throwing some reverse pedaling into the mix. I have a bad shoulder and my knee isn't in great shape so its one of the few decent workouts I can get into other than biking/swimming.
