I bought Minecraft in March of 2011 but I don't recall ever doing anything about converting the account. And the account is still up and running. That said, I admit I played semi-regularly for a LONG time... so it is possible I did some kind of conversion at some point and just don't remember it.

After you migrate to the mojang account, you should be set for the Java edition. Which is the one with most mods.

If you want the microsoft edition, there's supposed to be a way to get that too, but I had difficulties last time I tried.

I was early alpha but don't know my password, no longer have access to the email it was registered to, and their customer support for that issue doesn't work.

But I'm a fringe case. I'm out $10 from 2010 or so. I'm ok with that.

Hmm, I bought early too, like 2010? It was during the beta, and was only $10. I've been installing it over the years, and I did convert over to an MS account. Never heard that there was a deadline for that. You should keep following up. I assume you tried this?
